It's been a while since I posted an Ollie update. He is currently taking an advanced off lead class and will start a tricks class next week. Following the tricks class, we will take another run at agility. Normally Garry takes him on a walk to the field for his daily run. Today I went along and brought the iPad so we could get a video. He goes a LONG distance out into the field and then has perfect recall. What a difference from this time last year! You really have to look closely to see him at the beginning.

Kathi and the Turbotail April Angel...and the Labradork

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

UNNNNNNNNBEEEEEEEELIEVEABLE!!! I had to watch it twice to see how far away he was!!! And he came straight to you! Didn't run by you, didn't come to the general vicinity, came straight to you snd sat down!!!

It boggles my mind! Really!!! To think that he stops whatever it is he's doing, whatever scent he's chasing, and comes when you call him! Such a gooood boy!!

This just fascinates me to see what you and Ollie have accomplished! The power of love is an amazing thing! 🙂

What is the main motivation they use in this kind of training? What is the starting point? Treats? And from there, what? Would you have ever been able to do this kind of advanced training had you not done the earlier programs?

Heck, when I tell Myrtle she has to go out to pee, she will not...WILL NOT... move off the sofa until I crinkle the cookie bag and say cookie!

Always look forward to "anything Ollie"! Can't wait to see the tricks this boy is going to master!

Lots of love!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Wow!  You guys have done such great work with Ollie!  Knowing his behavior when you adopted him and how well he responds now gives me hope that I can make progress with Elly's issues!

Can't wait to see the results of the Tricks class- I had a lot of fun with the one we took.

Shelby Lynne; Jack Russell/Shiba Inu mix. Proud member of the April Angels of 2014.

October 15, 2000 to April 8, 2014

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

That is amazing, truly amazing. I love the way he comes galloping so fast and so focused and then immediately sits. It's like there's nothing in the world he wants to do more than please you and work with you. It's seriously impressive.

This made me laugh, Sally.

Heck, when I tell Myrtle she has to go out to pee, she will not...WILL NOT... move off the sofa until I crinkle the cookie bag and say cookie!

Meg is the opposite. She'll always go out but she WILL not come in unless I say chicken, then she rushes in straight for the fridge.

Think I might have to send her to Idaho to learn her manners from Ollie.

Gator is doing wonderfully! Ollie has been going to classes for almost two years now. If he had managed to get past the door when he had only been here as long as Gator has been with you, we would have needed to chase him down in the car! Ask me how many times that happened.

Ollie was a very determined runner, which is probably why he ended up in the shelter as a stray. He ran the second day we had him, and I only managed to corral him when he went through an open gate into a neighbor's back yard. We unsuccessfully tried several training methods with him, but finally ended up with a school that uses many, many treats along with a remote training collar. It was the only method that worked for him. Fortunately, he only needs a very rare buzzer reminder, which is very similar to the vibrate on my cell phone. Once he got the idea and developed the muscle memory, he has just blossomed. I know that most people obect to what they view as a "shock collar", but that is not the way this collar is used. It is a gentle reminder rather than a punishment. Ollie now comes to the sound of a whistle or our voices and expects there will be a treat or high praise when he gets to us. He even roams way out like he was in the video, but always keeps an eye out to make sure he knows where we are.

I can just about guarantee that if we had had him from a pup, we would have had a much easier time with his training. He knew absolutely nothing when we got him, except that he was house trained. No idea how someone managed to do that when the poor guy didn't even know what the word sit meant. He was about a year and a half old and weighed in at 90 pounds. No wonder he was Uncontrollable Ollie.

Nard to believe that we once referred to this boy as "Unco tollabE Ollie! Hard to velieve thst a previous shelter didn't think you were a good fit for a different dog.

What's not na hard to believe is that Murphy and Gus picked Ollie out for you because they knew Ollie needed you and you needed him. Ollie could never have thrived in any other home. And no other dog could help heal your heart like Ollie.

Anyone who knows you would EVER think for one second you would use a "method" that would harm Ollie or break is joyous spirit! You have ensured he will always be safe and those crazy days of running away from home are OVER! A life saving gift!!

Can't wait for more OLLIE!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

Lots of love

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

PS. Christine, Gator is ahead of Frankie. If I say "no" because he's counter surfing, he hears GO! It just means gobble up his prize really fast before I can take it from him.:-)
