We are currently on day 6 of Bowie's recovery from his rear leg amputation and this site has been a huge help thus far. He is 10 years old and was diagnosed with cutaneous lymphocytosis. I have found this to be a rare diagnosis that may or may not eventually lead to lymphoma.

He seems to be doing quite well so far but is either trembling or having spasms in his lower back area, at the site of amputation, and even in his remaining right leg. In the first couple days I was told that this is somewhat normal as things are settling down but was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if so, any idea how long it may take for things to settle down? It seems to be bothering me more than it bothers him but it's so hard to tell if he is in pain. I have been cleared to give him some gabapentin which doesn't seem to be helping with these spasms. It's disturbing to watch as sometimes his whole body shakes as a result of the twitching.

Any feedback would be hugely appreciated! Thank you.    Bowie's mom, Jess

Welcome Jess and Bowie, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

It might help to know what meds Bowie is taking.  You mention gabapentin- does he have anything else for pain? How long has he been taking the gabapentin?  It sometimes takes several doses before it becomes effective.

Here is a post on recognizing pain signs in dogs and cats.

Have you tried putting some heat on the area during the spasm?  How about a bit of gentle massage?

Here are some posts on massage.

I did not experience any kind of spasm or trembling in my Tripug Maggie as she healed from her rear amp but I know several members here have.

he was given metacam for inflammation and a separate pain med but only fro three days. He doesn't seem to be in pain but it's so hard to tell. Thank you for your response. We just started the gabapentin yesterday so maybe after a couple doses things will start to calm down.

It's srill early in recovery from major surgery.....major surgery that hurts!!

As Karen said, adding some pain meds and massage may be helpful.  Some twitching is"normal" initially as the nerve endings are adjusting to not have the leg to "send messages".

Some other kitty members can chime in, but I think the meds should help.   Let us know how it goes.
