Hi, my cats back leg was amputated 5 days ago. She keeps biting stitches out even with a e collar on. I went back to the vet for a bigger e collar and she had to get some liquid stitches to fix the hole she made. She keeps setting back her healing time by doing this. It’s stressing me out. I’m having to keep it wrapped and even ten she sometimes gets to it. Tonight I put a baby onesie on her then wrapped it.

Hi and welcome! Your future posts won't need to wait for approval so post away.

I'm sorry about the stitches situation. A rear leg amputation is tough when an animal is long bodied and super flexible. I hope the onesie helps.

What kind of pain medication is she on? What is the type, dosage, and frequency? Oftentimes biting at stitches is a sign that pain is not being adequately controlled. Animals will often bite at what they perceive to be the source of their pain.

Hi Hilary,

Looks like you had trouble logging in? Let us know if we can help.

It's good your cat is on Gabapentin. I would talk to your vet about adjusting the dosage to every 8 hours. Many times a small adjustment like that is all that's needed for more relief. Don't do that change until you talk to them though, since the amount might need to be reduced if the frequency is boosted. Let us know what they say.

Hi Hilary! I am so sorry to hear about this. It is so so frustrating. Our boy, Scott, got his front leg and scapula amputated on 01/20 and the recovery process has been FAR harder than we imagined.

Like Jerry said, maybe talk to your vet about upping the gabapentin dose. Or maybe adding in another pain reliever? We noticed Scott would not mess with his suture in the beginning when he had Buprenorphine and Gabapentin.

Let us know how these next days go. Hang in there!
