My boy cat Dino just had his leg amputated a couple of days ago. The first night he was home he uses the litter box. Since then he’s owed on the couch and on a fusion and a towel he was sleeping on on the floor. I’m not sure what’s going on any ideas? Tips? Help !

FYI: Since your post is not necessarily a veterinary medical questions, we've moved your topic here where it will get the attention it deserves from other tri-kitty members.

It may be difficult for Dino to use the litter box. Did you create a low-profile litter box for him to make it easier? Find that and many more helpful ideas in Cool Tips for Tripawd Cats .

My tripawd Mona did the same thing. When she was with the vet he said she used the litter box. When she got home she chose to go everywhere but the litter box. I had cut out the front so that she could walk into the box and put in "Yesterday's News" as advised by the vet. She never did go on her bed but was very creative and went in a desk drawer. icon_lol Yes, I laugh now...

I finally got the clay, used letter out of the garbage and used that which she accepted but she would balance herself on the lip of the litter box to go. She seemed to improve when she was off all meds. It's not easy for front-amputees to dig a hole and cover it up so Mona does cause a bit of a mess.

Read the links the Admin guy provided and phone your vet who may have some ideas.

Hugs to you and Dino,

Kerren and Tripawd Kitty Mona

My kitty is just a few days out of surgery himself.  I got a foil roasting pan from the dollar store and folded down the edges so he could easily hop in.  Keep a broom handy, it's going to be messy.  Can you confine him to a smaller area?  Having limited options to pee might encourage him to go in his box.  Also, if you're using different litter than usual, you might have to mix it in slowly.  My man had zero interest in the newspaper litter the doctor recommended (it's common for cats to dislike sudden changes in their litter and act out accordingly), and only used his old clay litter, but I'm mixing in the newspaper more and more to get him used to it gradually.  I'm finding that surrounding Binx with things he's familiar with (his regular blanket, a cushion from the couch where he likes to sleep) is helping him stay comfortable.
