Hello Everyone

Yes, I remember seeing the video about the person with the 19yo cat.

He was giving one big 100cc syringe in the skin near the back of the neck. Some days are more successful than others. He mentioned how one day he only got 30cc in.

That made me feel better this morning because the first 50cc ended up leaking onto the counter. I guess the needle didn't go all the way in. The 2nd 50cc went in ok.

Hopefully tomorrow will be better

I remember on that video he uses a bigger syringe and needle so the solution goes in quickly and looks like he puts the needle in the middle of the  back. He makes it look so easy. I was able to get 100cc in no problem today.

Hello All

Jolie went in for checkup. He has lost some weight and blood count is down again. So and injection to stimulate rbc production and more iron. I had to spend some time in another city for the 4 day Lunar holiday so I took mignon and Jolie with me. It knocked them off their routine so they were eating less. I couldn't tell if Jolie was having nausea or not so I gave some cerenia. We are back home since yesterday so it seems their eating is almost back to normal. The next check up is in 2 weeks so it seems Jolie is doing OK....

Excellent job giving the cerenia and realizing Jolie may be nauseous, and that will tell the tale. Anytime he is hesitant about food, I bet it's nausea. I would inquire again about the zofran/ondan to have on hand. I repeat myself when I KNOW from experience something works. Zofran worked better for nausea, and cerenia better for vomiting. That was our own experience and many other kitty owners' experiences. It's excellent to have both available when we have ongoing health challenges. It will help Jolie eat & hopefully, we can get where we maintain weight and not lose.🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Routines and cats are a HUGE deal. I'm glad everything seems normal now that you are all home & back to your routines.

Prayers the iron & injection will bring those numbers back up again; I'm sure they will. I'm relieved you can do the follow-ups. Jolie still gets his hypertension meds?

YES, repeating again;) The boys are lucky to have you!💝
Give them both a smooch from us, please😽😽
Thanks for the update. We wondered how you were all doing.

Oh whew! That's good they are both back to normal, or getting there. Yep, routines getting messed up can sure do a number on our animals' psyche. I'm glad you're all back together. And Happy New Year! I hope you had a nice celebration.

So glad you were avle to get away and have some celebratory time for yourself.  I know the cats may not jave enjoyed it, but I k ow they enjoyed being with you!!!

Agree, a change in routine can cause some disruption  in normal routine for Mignom and Jolie.  Like me, the older I get the more set in my ways I become😉

Everything sounds good overall....keep it up kitties!!!

Hello:)

I did some syringe feeding this morning too because of the low weight.  After, Jolie and Mignon also enjoyed 2 chicken snack tubes and I got them to eat some dry food as well. They also enjoyed some Feline Greenies (roasted chicken flavor). It always makes me feel better when I see them eating. Yesterday, Jolie and Mignon were quite active too and they both (especially Jolie) enjoyed playing with their toy.

I had trouble getting the IV in this morning.  Jolie just wasn't in the mood for it at all.  I was finally able to get 70cc out of 100 to go in.  I was able to  get the meds down no problem.   Jolie was in a good mood after and followed me around as I got ready to go to work.

I did feel guilty taking them away from home.  Usually I would shuttle back and forth and not move them away from  their routine.  But Lunar New Year is a crazy  time and almost impossible to get trains and such, so I made the decision to take them with me for the 4 day holiday.  I knew it would disrupt their routine and probably their eating too.  But to be able to continue with Jolie's IV, I had to do it.

I would like to get a hold of some Jofran.  As it was, I had to do some talking to get the vet to give me some Cerenia.  The vet seems to be quite reluctant to prescribe those 2 meds (Jofran and Cerenia).  I don't know why.

I am not so sure Jolie has hypertension. At the vet, they put the cone on him so they won't get scratched when they put on the pressure cuff, but putting on the cone stresses Jolie out so much, I doubt those over 200 bp readings are accurate.  When I do it at home, it's more 140-150 range which I have a feeling is more accurate.

I also forgot to ask for a print out of the meds and dosages.  He is taking twice a day doses of a mixture of medication that the hospital grinds up and puts in pouches.  There are two different ones, one for morning and one for evening. They give me empty capsules.  When I get home I transfer all of these dosages of ground up meds to the capsules which I can then administer easily using the pill gun.  Then there are the iron tablets that he takes once per day.  I break these tablets in half and put the two halves in a capsule. So, in all he takes 3 capsules per day; two in the morning and one in the evening.

Separately, I have 10 pouches of Cerenia.  I put 5 of the pouches into 5 capsules and I'm saving them in case either Mignon or Jolie stops eating again and hope they will do the trick.  I will push for some Zofran the next time I go to the vet.  I'm hoping everything will go smoothly at home until then.

That's awesome everything worked out with Jolie's meds. He knows it's to help him feel better and how much you want to help him.

Don't beat yourself up for taking them with you on holiday. You had to do it, and it was less stress than any alternatives right? It was all for the best and it worked out. Yay!

I agree, the stress at the vet can cause his blood pressure to go up. Especially since he's in a cone too! Glad you are able to get lower readings at home.

Many vets are reluctant to prescribe different medications when they just don't have direct experience with it, and the results. That makes sense. But you being such a great advocate for Jolie, a perfect blend of confidence in your requests and respect for how the vet does things, that it's clear the vet puts a lot of trust in you. I think that this experience will help your vet see that these meds can be helpful in a situation like this.

I hope today / tonight goes well!

A big DITTO to Jerry, and it did all work out. Had you not, Jolie would not have gotten his fluids and meds.Thankfully you could take the boys & you are now back in your routines.

I would do the same on syringe feeding to get extra calories when possible. Excellent job, as always!!

The main thing is - if what you are doing now is working EXCELLENT!!!! If not, ask more questions and follow up with your research. It never hurts to ask questions and state what you have found.
Hugs and love to both the boys, please!

Coming in behind Jerry and Holly, I get to say ditto to both!

Sometimes take my blood pressure twice at the Doctor.  Hate to go,  always  anxious.thus it often  reads  high.   He calls it "white coat syndrome "😉  Ya' see a Doctor in their white coat and your blood pressure goes up!  Guessing Jolie seems the cone as the human version of the white coat and it makes his blood pressure go up!👍

What you're doing is working for jolie.

Taking him with you to do the IV was the right and smart thing to do. Everything you are doing is working. I wouldn't fret about whether you can get the additional Zofran  or not, as the Cerenia does the trick. It may be that the vet just doesn't want to introduce another med while everything is working together nicely.

You are doing such an excellent job of taking care of these two. Be sure and take care of yourself in the meantime too, okay?

Hello All:)

I was thinking about the possible differences in vet treatment philosophies between U.S. and Korea.   Is the prescribing of Cerenia and Zofran for CKD cats standard practice in the U.S.? I am asking because the vet here doesn't seem to see it as standard practice.

I had difficulty again this morning getting the needle to go in correctly during IV.  The saline solution was leaking out around the needle and it took me 2 more tries before I could get the solution to flow in instead of out onto the counter.  I must have been inserting at the wrong angle maybe?

After that though, I did a syringe feeding no problem and the two boys ate a snack tube apiece and some feline greenies.

So, it was a good morning.... and in checking the webcam mid-day, I found Jolie eating some of his food.

thanks everyone for your comments and continued good will

It's always very helpful and always appreciated.

Your vet is not the only one who is not familiar or unaware. I am attaching the PDF link below. Maybe take that in with you print or show on your device. You very well might teach the vet something and help many other ckd kitties in the process.

I say once more if things are working out fine now, no worries, but yes, if not, I would be asking for the med. It gave our Saxton extended qol for heart disease, and it does so many for CKD it's night and day difference . If we did not have the Zofran we would have lost our Saxton sooner than we did. I called it his magic pill. I popped it in, and half an hour later, Saxton was happily eating again. He lived for his food, loved eating so seeing him eat as usual was a joy for us all!! We knew he felt good enough to eat, and he happily gulped down his food. You understand that feeling very well.

I don't know about your fluids. What I know is you manage most days, and that's what counts! You have great days and off days, and you get fluids in regardless; that's the win!!

YAY for GREAT days, and your Dad cam.smiley_clapsmiley_clapsmiley_clap
Give the boys a smooch and chin scratch from us please.

💝💝💝

P.S. on Jolie BP take your machine in at your next recheck and compare. That will show you and the vet both the difference in readings at home (accuracy) also when you do have issues with the fluids, I suggest taking a video of the issue IF POSSIBLE. Maybe the vet can direct you better by seeing whats going on. If not we know the CKD group can better assist you. A picture or video says so much more than our words can.
