I just heard a program about a new tool to determine if a cat is in acute pain: https://www.cbc.....-1.5446317

Here is the training document on reading the cat's pain level: https://static-.....M1_ESM.pdf

This is used to assess acute pain, not chronic pain and helps vets to better manage the cats' pain.

Here is a copy of the study https://www.nat.....19-55693-8

Kerren,

Thank you so much for this.  On Monday my lovely Boy Milo got his left rear leg amputated.  While I am staying diligent on his pain meds I am just unsure how he is feeling.  Last night he had a pain attack and it was so scary I took him to the ER.  He stayed over night and was fine, but still need to make sure it doesn’t happen again if I can.  I am printing this out and going to keep close watch on him.

Thank you so much Kerren! I believe this is what our friend Stephen Cital told us about lwhen we chatted with him for our Tripawd Talk Radio segment about managing feline pain, "Tripawd Cats Pain Management Tips and Tricks." I'm so glad you shared it! I've added it to my "To Do" list for a future Tripawds News blog post.

Hi Amy and Milo. pain management in cats isn't easy because they tend not to express themselves. It's great you knew Milo was having a problem. I hope he's doing better and like Jerry said, please start a topic for Milo so everyone can get to know him better.

Your welcome Jerry. I remember the chart Scott talked about. I think it was this one which seems to refer more to body language and behaviour: https://ivapm.o.....ain-level/

This Feline Grimace Scale tends to focus on the eyes, ears, whiskers, muzzle and head position. Little did I know. I tend to notice lethargy, vomiting, not eating and when they avoid me!

All these are good tools for when you get a cat!

2021 FGS Survey

The survey will take around 20-30 minutes to complete. You will be shown ten images of cat faces including cats that are not in pain and cats with different levels of pain. Examples of the images are available on the training manual which you will be asked to see prior to starting the survey,

Thank you Holly! This reminded me to create a Tripawds News blog post about the scale. Appreciate your placing this information here.

The present survey will be available in English and Spanish from March 15th to May 15th, 2021to cat owners globally. It will evaluate the ability of cat owners to assess acute pain using the FGS (when compared with veterinarians’ assessment), and whether demographic characteristics affect these results. This project was reviewed and approved by the R(D)SVS Human Ethical Review Committee, University of Edinburgh and the Comité d’éthique de la recherche en sciences et en santé (CERSES), Université de Montréal.

I highly recommend the 2021 FGS Survey we did it. Just a heads up you do not get a score but it does help with research!
