Our cat had a rear leg amputated several weeks ago. He's doing fine running and jumping but he still has occasional problems turning around or moving slowly.

is there anything we can do to help him relearn the skill or does it just take time on his own?

Hi Rick! Your future posts won't need to wait for approval so post away.

Tell us more about your cat.

What's his name and how old is he? What was the reason for the amputation?

Is he carrying any extra weight around?

What happens when he turns or moves slowly?

When he can't turn or move, where does it happen? Do you have slippery floors?

Sorry for all the questions but the more we know the better we can help. Looking forward to learning all about him!

While waiting to hear back, just want to add that cats and dogs "generally" need a faster pace for balance  and momentum.  Not sure if this explains why he doesn't  use a  "slow" pace or not. He's not " walking backwards", eight?  Aome tri kitties when first adapting  to three do sort of a backwards walk when tirning.

As Jerry said, we'll look forward to your feedback.

His name is Loki. He’s 9.5 y.o. He lost a leg to cancer. He sometimes has a hard time turning around when he is simply standing, sitting, or walking. He might fall or end up turning in a complete circle.

Doesn’t happen all the time but it can happen on any flooring and he’s not overweight.

Thanks for the deets on Loki! Sorry for the cancer diagnosis. Hopefully the amputation is curative? And yay for him not being overweight!

OK the turning and standing....it does take time to get balance and core strength built up. You can help with a few simple exercises like these:

Also consider a visit with a rehab therapist to ensure Loki is on the right track. It's also very educational for pet parents too, in order to learn how to keep their Tripawd strong and injury free. Tripawds Foundation can pay for your first rehab visit !
