Hi all new to site looking for some advice.

I have a 12yr old cocker spaniel who had his rear leg amputated on 20th Dec after he had a lump grow back on his hind leg which was thought to be cancer,  I thought he was adapting well as he was able to go out the next day to pee and go poop. A few days later he had a lot of bruising around his wound and on his groin area which then began to swell up.

I ended up having to take him to vets on Christmas day as he just wasn't eating or wanting to move around. He was kept in as he had a high temp and to get some fluids into him, I was to collect him 5pm the same day. When  I collected him they told me he had an infection and that they couldn' get fluids into him as his veins were collapsing each time they tried to give him fluids. He had anti bio injection and pain killer and was sent home with me that night to come bk in the morning. He seemed to perk up a little once we were home and ate a little dinner.

Through the night I noticed a small ulcer/blister just under his wound area which burst and was weeping a pink fluid. When I went bk to vets they said it was a seroma and that it was infected, it smelled (sour).  Was told it was fine for it to weep and sent home with antibiotics. I have been bk twice now regarding his wound/seroma as the fluid is blood red now and sticky and weeping quite a bit having to change his bedding alot as it is soaking wet with blood,  when he wakes in the morning his leg is crusted with dark red blood and sheets are soaked 2. Im concerned about the amount of blood he is losing and that it is rather smelly.  Am I over reacting? Is this normal the leaking blood e everywhere. Should i trust what the vet is telling me,

Sorry this is so long , been alot of sleepless nights for us both since the operation and i so worried about him

Just checking in with you Dede.  Guessing you went to the Chat Room and got some good information and support from Jerry.

Sorry your sweet pup is having such a ruff time with the seroma .  They can be a challenge sometimes.  Good for you for staying on top of things and recognizing the signs of an infection!!  You are a very strong advocate for your pu pupl!!

What's his name?  Cockers are so darn cute.  We would love to see pictures!

As far as fluid and having issues with his veins.  Did they say why they thought they were collapsing?  Also, and I'm no Vet, vut seems like they could at least give him some subQ fluids.

Let us know how things are going, okay?

Hugs
