Hey all, zuzu will be going through surgery soon and as we are trying to prepare im toying with the idea of making a potty patch for our balcony. Zuzu will be having a rear leg amp and we live in the third floor with 24 steps to the parking lot and 28 if we go to the courtyard. I don't see this as being doable, even with the get a grip harness.
I've looked up tons of ideas for a diy potty patch but I'm having problems figuring out how to keep it from draining in the carpet. We have indoor/outdoor carpet on the balcony. I'm hoping the landlord will allow this for a few weeks as she's starting her recovery.

Anyway, does anyone have any ideas on how to keep it from draining onto the carpet? I was thinking a wood frame with soil to help soak it up with sod on top. Anyone have experience with building one?

I haven't tried this exactly, but I think it's a great idea to have an area on your porch. I lived in a very large building, about block's walk to get outside and got stuck several times trying to get her back in. Have you considered pee pads? They'll prevent leakage and won't require a step up to access. You could get her used to them before surgery to get her comfortable.

Well, the original plan was pee pads, I'm just not sure if Zuzu will be willing to use them. We think she'll be more willing to go on a grass patch.

We already have issues getting her outside (as a quad), sometimes she just gets stubborn and doesn't want to go out. Last 4th of July the fireworks had her so freaked out she had to be carried down the steps for 3 days would barely pee and be trying to rush back inside, so I fear we have our work cut out for us.

Whatever plan we go with we will be starting soon, so we can hopefully get her accustomed to the change before surgery.

Yes, it sounds like a good idea to build a frame, get some strong plastic to line it and then possibly get some real grass and place it there

I think I saw somewhere they sell "ready to go" grass by the meter ???

Would artificial grass do the trick if real one is not available?

A crazy idea (which might work) would be to build the peeing area and then get other dogs to go and pee there so she would feel like marking her territory afterwards ...

Good luck !!!

We plan on going with real sod. Should only take a roll or two, and is fairly inexpensive. I have to double check local prices but its usually less than $5 a roll.

LOL! Great minds think alike! I was planning on asking our neighbor(who adores Zuzu and will do anything to help in her recovery) to see if her dog would use it, as well as telling one of my other neighbors that their dogs could use it. They like to just pee on the carpet in front of where I plan on putting the potty patch, so it would actually be in improvement in that sense.

There is a pheromone spray that is supposed to attract dogs to pee where you spray it.  I tried it years ago when I was trying to get Maggie to pee in a certain area away from the lawn.  It didn't work for me actually, Mag preferred the lawn, I was just happy that she always went outside!

I potty trained the pugs with pee pads, but once they graduated to going outside they would never use them again.  I occasionally would try to use them when it was raining but the pugs just went outside and got wet.  They would sometimes run around the house dragging the pads, I think they liked the crinkly sound.

I think a pee party on the grass patch on the balcony sounds great, I hope it works.

Thanks Karen, I'll look into the spray. Yeah, Zuzu is 11 and we don't think she'll be willing to use the pee pads. I hope we can get this built and working (and not piss off the landlord). Time will tell!!
