Happy Tripawlidays Everyone and thank you all for welcoming Johnny home and giving best wishes to him! Johnny hadn't received any further sedatives since Monday afternoon so he was very alert and with it when we visited Tuesday evening. The docs wanted him to go out to pee and that was how long the walk was in the hospital. Once they realized he would pee for us they let us take him home! He loves getting his cold compresses and sits nice and quietly for 20 minutes every 4 hours. He also super enjoys his trips out back to pee! He even pooped last night at 11:30!!! He has less confidence with the lead on... I think it throws off him being able to do the balancing so he has been going out back with me but off lead. They're short walks! I wanted to attach a video of his first outside pee from yesterday at 1 pm. Also some pictures: hanging with his sisters last night Sandy 12 yr old lab mix, Kahuna 4 year old pittie, Marley his litter mate and Weenie our 2 year old chi and him enjoying his cold compresses from today but not sure how to do that yet...... way-confused

The easiest way to share videos is to post them on Youtube (or Vimeo). Then all you have to do is paste the share link on a line by itself in your forum post and it will auto-embed.

Here are detailed instructions for adding photos to forum posts . If you don't already share photos online somewhere, you can start a free Tripawds blog any time and upload them there.

I'm just getting up to date on Johnny's surgery and recovery. It sounds like he's doing great so far. I laughed when you said that he's usually accompanied by his sister for vet visits. My tripawd cat Mona also accompanies my male cat Eli to the vet where Mona lies on top of Eli while he gets his check up. The vet also works with this layer of cats to test Eli's blood and urine. It's good to know it's not a cat thing, maybe just a male thing?

I look forward to seeing your photos and videos.

Scratches for Johnny,

Kerren and Tripawd Kitty Mona

Johnny's surgeon called yesterday....it was a nerve sheath tumor for sure and pathology came back with CLEAN MARGINS !!!!! This means they got it all and radiation is not needed at this time! If a nerve sheath tumor is going to come back/regrow they say it will do so within 9 months. Now that his leg and scapula are gone and they can see the area clearly he will get an ultrasound every 3 months. If I could do it every month I would... and of course at Johnny's follow up / suture removal on Tuesday I am going to ask about this. Should there be any regrowth we will seek radiation therapy. Thank you all for your support and kind words through this process. I have to also thank my horse Toby's doctor at Foxfield Equine for advising me to get a fourth opinion and Johnny's amputation surgeon Dr. Sadanaga at VRC Malvern who has better "bedside manners" than some human doctors and surgeons! I hope all of you and yours are having Happy Tripawidays! We here are cherishing every moment with our boy and his sisters are sure happy to have him home too!

I am so thrilled at this wonderful news of clean margins.  This makes for a very good prognosis indeed, without the trauma of radiation treatment.  So happy for you and Johnny!

Lisa, Minneapolis

On October 27, 2016, nearly 6 months after amputation, and 18 months since his cancer likely started, we lost Pofi to a recurrence of Soft Tissue Sarcoma in his spine quite suddenly.  His canine sister also succumbed to cancer on March 1, 2019 - we lavished her with our love in the interim, but life was never quite the same without her only real canine friend. Cliff kitty had to leave us, too, suddenly, in August 2019. Lucia kitty grieved all these losses, but helped us welcome two new Lurchers into our home and our lives, Shae and Barley.

Chiming in late but wanted to give Johnny best wishes!

Biscuit was diagnosed with a NST similar to Johnny's but it was a high grade and we ultimately decided to do radiation and chemo following his amputation. He's an 8yo beagle mix and went through amputation and treatment in fall 2015 and did wonderfully throughout. Unfortunately we discovered in January of last year that the cancer had spread to his lungs. But he has lived a full year despite the poor prognosis! His time with us is winding down, but I don't regret any of the treatment because he rebounded quickly and we were able to have an extended amount of quality time with him. I think younger dogs like Biscuit and Johnny do especially well with amputation and take it all in stride. Johnny sure has overcome a lot and will continue to live a great life!
