Dallas,  6 year old German Shepard, had his front leg (and shoulder) removed on Wednesday March 7th, 2018. He was attacked by another dog on Thursday March 2nd, 2018. His leg was injury was stitched up after the incident, but recovery did not ensue. His leg entire leg had become necrotic due to nerve damage, and removal was deemed necessary.

Dallas is doing just fine as far as mobility, drinking, and eating goes. However, his surgical site is not healing as planned. The vertical row of staples seems to be doing their job and he is scabbing and healing in that area, but the lower, horizontal row of staples is not holding. He was having a fair amount of drainage and has visited the vet two times this last week for check ups. They had tried additional staples, but they did not last through the night, his skin is very friable in that area, I imagine due to constant saturation. He returned to the vet the next day, and the Dr. had flushed it, removing a couple of clots and "goo." The infection swab came back negative so that is a plus. The Dr. sent us home and Dallas has visible holes and the surgical site, she insisted that we not get discouraged, but to be prepared for a longer recovery time as she is hoping is body will close the wound naturally. She sent us home with a compression mesh for him to wear and to help keep a maxi pad in place over his wound. He wears a t- shirt as well.

Has anybody else had an experience like this? Just wondering what we can expect considering he essentially has a hole on his side now. Maybe an idea on recovery time, or some other suggestions for care.

Welcome and best wishes for Dallas! Do not get discouraged indeed, but do pay extra special attention to ensure that he does not make matters any worse by licking or scratching the incision site. Double up on the cone of shame if necessary!

Oh sweetie, poor Dallas ...

I am sorry I cannot offer any specific advise as my girl Eurydice never had problems with her stitches ...

But you've got great advice already to make sure he doesn't fiddle with the area at any point.

You are doing an excellent job monitoring him and being in touch with the vet anytime.

It is good news there's no infection so you just have to let time go by and keep a close eye on your boy.

Sending lots of positive thoughts your way 😘😘🐮💫✨🌟🌹

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)

Thanks for the support. A couple steps back today after getting home from work. Additional staples have been dislocated. Open wood now the size of a baby's first. Emailed pictures to the vet. She said make sure to keep is covered, and he will see him in he morning. Unfortunately it doesn't sound like she is going to sedate him to do additional stitching. Hoping she has a solution.

Hello,

Wonderful to meet you and Dallas, but so sorry it had to be this way!  One of my kitties, Tuxedo had his rear leg amputated following a run in with a dog.  So I can definitely relate to much of what you are experiencing on many levels even though different species and different leg.  Two weeks after his surgery, the vet took Tuxedo's stitches out and his incision had not healed leaving a large portion of it gapping open to a rather deep level.  The unhealed area was about the size of a walnut, which on a small cat seemed huge.  Evidently he had an infection.  He was given several antibiotics and a large bandage was stitched to his skin.  Stitched to his skin sounds worse than it really was.  It was several loops which were stitched to him and the bandage was held in place by lacing through those loops.  This bandage did resemble a maxi pad in that it was VERY thick.  Initially the bandage was wet and over time it would dry.  Everyother day he had to go in to get the dry bandage replaced with a new wet one.  He had to be sedated for each of these which was very worrysome.  At the time I discussed several options with my vet such as flap surgery (essentially Cutting a flap of nearby skin loose but leaving it still attached and stretching It to cover the open wound)  but decided to just keep with the bandages.  We also added several cool laser sessions which I believe did promote faster healing.  It was a very long healing process of roughly six weeks, but the wound did finally close.  Even now 10 months later Tuxedo still has an area which looks like a dent where it was, but it does not bother him in the least.

Kind of a long story from me, but just know that others here have been through extended wound healing processes too.  Hopefully very soon you and your vet will have a plan to get Dallas all healed up.

Hugs & Best wishes,

-Dawna, Dazzle, and Tuxedo

That is so stressful. I'm so sorry you're having these complications. Waiting for the site to heal is the worst part, because you can't really focus on getting back to normal until that's behind you. Hoping your visit today was productive. Let us know how Dallas is doing <3

Dallas' bottom row of staples had completely opened up. It gradually got larger and larger each day . We had been using a compression "shirt" and a maxi pad to cover and adsorb fluids. Nearly needed two pads!oh-my The doc had finally decided another go at closure was necessary. About time! (I make the vet out to sound cruel, but they treat him and us very well) We just got him home, his vertical incision is essentially healed! staples were removed. He now has a draincrying (he hasn't been draining a whole lot, thinking the drain may have been unnecessary), staples, and now some loop sutures which I was happy to see. Feeling optimistic about this go around, hoping recovery ensues!

I wish I could figure out to post pictures on here.
