Hi Lucy and family.  Yep, we all freaked out for at least a week after amputation.  If it weren't for this site, I think I would have had a breakdown because I had no idea what to expect!  You are right to stay upbeat in Lucy's presence.  We live in Pennsylvania and Zeus' surgery was in December.  Our agreement was that we had to go outside to cry or panic, and let me tell you, going outside in -2 degree weather was major motivation to stay upbeat.  winker

We also did not take Zeus' temp during recovery.  He was very very very lethargic and did not move much at all the first week, but there wasn't any stomach upset, discharge, bad smell from the incision, etc. so we never really worried about infection.  Zeus is older which seems to translate to a longer recovery, and he strained his back two weeks after amp so he had to take pain meds for a full month post-amp.  Once off the meds, he started acting WAY more normal but it still took him a while to want to play again and act energetic.  Try not to worry too much - Lucy will surprise you!

Good luck with the rest of recovery!

Lisa

Thank you! Lucy's recovery is very unpredictable; one minute she seems depressed, the next she's agitated and then she's trying to take off and do all the things she did before the surgery. I'm trying to stay upbeat and not let things rattle me. And I agree, if it weren't for this site I might have had a breakdown already too!

My Maggie had a fever start 4-5 days after amputation...and went off her food.  After a couple of types of antibiotics, Belladonna homeopathic remedy and some IV fluid with Vit B, she came around but it was a hard pull for a couple weeks to get her to want to eat(tried many things).

Hang in there, it gets better!

I think I have some Belladonna. Lucy's temp has been up and down, so if it goes up again I'll try that. Thank you for the suggestion!

Aren't these blogs a blessing?  Emily, our 1 1/2 yr old goldie had surgery 15 days ago.  (Her front leg was removed after a fast-growing tumor proved cancerous.)  My husband took her to the vet today (she was there just Tuesday afternoon).  She's running a fever of 104+, declines food, is dehydrated, and has bouts of shivering.  The vet is keeping her at least overnight with IV fluids running.  She ate canned food for him - what a princess!  She gets dry at home!  Today's X-rays came back negative for masses/pneumonia.  Reading all the encouraging words here is very helpful (as long as my supervisor isn't standing behind me.whatever)  Many thanks.......

Hi Jane,

Welcome to Tripawds, and so sorry you are dealing with cancer in your sweet Golden Emily. She is so young and it does not seem fair at all. Since you started posting under an older forum, many here may not see your new post. We have many great forums here, and I was thinking maybe you could go to "Share your Story" and tell us about your girl. There are so many of us that will help and support you with this new scary journey you are starting with Emily. We have all been where you are, so we definitely understand.

Hope to see the whole story of your Emily soon, and in the meantime, take deep breaths and hoping she is better and back home with you soon. She is at the best place possible right now with her vet, and they will get her past this bump in the road.

Thinking of you and Emily,

Bonnie & Angel Polly

Awwwww.....sorry sweet Emily is having this challenge. Ugh!

But as Bonnie said, she is in the best possible place and getting lots of good fluids, probably a good dose of antibiodics too.

Glad her xrays were good ....and she ate for the vet! Princess indeed!

Lea,

Hi, I'm not doctor but my Oncologist said 103 was a pretty average to high temp but could be caused from so many things.  You did the right thing in calling.  My Bailey girl had a 104.7 and a 105.2 after her 5th chemo and fluids were a big issue with her but nothing that they gave her during chemo agreed with her so it was very hard with keeping lots of fluids in her.

I hope she is doing well and on the road to a speedy recovery.  Keep us all up to date on her progress.

HUGS,

Tracy and Bailey Girl

Vicky

My dog had surgery yesterday to remove to lumps that was on a nipple. He is a male dog 6 years old. He is eating and drinking. But seems very restless. And panting really bad. He seems overheated. We have ac on and temp in house 80 degrees. He seems like he has a fever. What can I safely give him for fever?

Hi Vicky, welcome. I recommend calling your vet, as there could be many reasons why he's running a fever. Don't give him anything without your vet's approval.

Are you able to check his temperature? Many times restlessness is due to not enough pain control, or he's having a reaction to the one that he's on. What kind of pain medication is he on?
