Our Lucy had her front left leg amputated today and we will bring her home on Friday.  My husband and I are working to re-arrange our work schedules so that at least one of us is at home with her all the time. We can do that for at least a week; in your experience, how much longer will we need to do so?  I don't mean leave her for 8 hours, but when might it be safe to leave for 1-3 hours (into work quickly then home)? Any advice will be very much appreciated; like everyone else in this position we are sad, scared, and don't know what to expect.

Every dog is different, but one week of close supervision should suffice. Please consult your vet with any serious concerns, and take some time to do some research here to ensure a full speedy recovery without complications so you can leave Lucy safely unattended.

Sorry you find yourself here, but under the circumstances there is no better place to be!

As you've already seen from the links the Admin Guy gave you, there is a whole lot of information here! We will support you in anyway we can.

This journey is scary at first! It is stressful, sad, full of uncertainty and emotionally exhausting! On top of that, recovery is no picnic! But we are all here to tell you, once Lucy gets through recovery and her sparkle starts to come back, it will all be worth it!

Reason for Lucy's amp? How old is your sweet girl? Can't wait to hear more abput her personality! How much does she weigh?

Couple of quick tips. If you jave hardwood floors, put down non slip scatter rugs or cheap yoga mats for traction . When you go to pick Lucy up Friday, don't even bother looking at her incision or draw attention to it. Lucy isn't goi g to look at it! Just look in her druggy eyes and tell her what a good girl she is and give her @ots of applause!!

Of course every dog and every situation is different, but a week should be ample time to observe, get her throw the rough slots, and see how well she is doing. You'll want to keep all stairs blocked off, no jumping up on sofa, etc. Probably the biggest concern is making sure Lucy doesn't get to the stitches. A cone, plus tee shirt should take care of that.

There are a few dogs like my Happy Hannah who never needed a cone. That was only with me watching her non stop from the git go and never seeing her showing ANY interest in her incision EVER.....ZERO!! She definitely was the exception (because she was, indeed, EXCEPTIONAL) and a cone is absolutely the safest way to go....or soft donut cone.

STAY CONNECTED and let us k ow how we can help! Will be watching for yiur updates!

Hugs!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Thank you Sally and crew--I much appreciate it. Like every dog parent, we are anxious and just want to do right by our girl.  Lucy was a rescue dog--we've had her about 3.5 years, and she is between 7-8years old.  Lucy is a yellow lab and whippet mix--I call her our Whipador, and tell her that she is a very special breed.  She is fast as the wind and loves to run, so I am encouraged to hear that those days may not be behind her yet.   She weighs about 55 lb.

Lucy, like all beloved dogs, is the best dog ever--but she is an anxious one.  She howled all night at the vet before her surgery, and is NOT GOOD with the cone.  I have ordered one of the comfy cones but am hoping we can supervise her enough to avoid using it much.

Our house is kind of tough--stairs to get inside and outside, and steep stairs to our second floor, but we at least have carpeting on them.  I really appreciate the suggestion about getting something for other slippery floors like yoga mats and will do that tomorrow.  I wanted to buy a harness for her but I don't have her measurements so will have to wait until she is home. her bed has been an old couch in our bedroom, but i think it will be hard to get up there for a bit, so I have ordered one of the 7" memory foam beds that are recommended on the Tripawds gear part of the website.  This is such an invaluable resource.

We don't know yet what kind of bone cancer she has (had)? It was in an unusual spot on the leg our surgeon said so we still have some hope that it wasn't an osteosarcoma.  We have always known that getting her several years on we wouldn't have her as long, but I think we all felt that we should get a good 5 years with her so were very shocked by this diagnosis.

Awww, she really hit the Puppy Lottery when she picked you for her furever home! Because of you, Lucy now knows what love and joy and happiness feel like!!

Yeah, the steps may be a challenge at first. During recovery a harness may irritate the incision so its not something you want ro use right away. Perhaps a sling from a towel or a canvas bag may help.

Front leggers generally can go UP stairs okay, but have a harder time going down. My Frankie was already a front leg trilawd when I got him and he sails up and down the step stairs I have with no problem! My Happy Hannah, who lost her rear leg due tomosteo, never did master going up, but she went down just fine.

POFI is a front legger dog here who mastered stairs very quickly! He was a big determined guy!

Keep things chunked down for now and just focus on recovery. Days on a calendar mean nothing to Roxy and she doesn't give a rip about statistics!! Good thing Pug Maggie didn't listen to her "prognosis" of 6 to 9 months. She headed to the Bridge FOUR YEARS LATER and from something differe t!! Good think Cemil didn't listen....she's still trucking along five years later!

Oh, and maybe when Lucy is further along in recovery, you can put some cushiins in front of the couch so when she jumps down her front leg is cushioned.

We have a post in how to ise the canvas shopping bag...gonna go fi d it...be right back!

Just wanted to add, when I asked our vet when we could leave Harmony alone, he surprised us by saying, "The quicker you get back to your normal schedule, the better for her."

He also said that she would heal better and quicker without us "fussing" over her and her feeling the need to "please".

So, we put her in a room by herself and went to work. I have to say, I wasn't very good at concentrating on my job, but when we got home, the difference in her was obvious. She really needed the rest and break from us! LOL!

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.

Ditto what Sally and the others have mentioned. I left Boone alone for 3 hours on his 8th day post-amp (front leg - osteosarcoma) and I'm pretty sure he just slept. I work from home so our normal routine is for me to be here much of the day, although I run out for meetings, errands, etc. for up to 4 hours at a time.

Boone pretty much avoids the kitchen now (linoleum) but I took the TriPawd community's advice to put down non-slip rugs, etc. so he wouldn't fall. The only stairs he has to navigate are 3 short ones to his back yard and by day 5 I didn't have to help him (and by helping I was just at his side in case he bobbled).

It's definitely an adjustment (we're on day 10 post-amp) but Boone is adapting quickly, so I'm hopeful your Lucy will also adapt quickly.

Sending her (and you) lots of healing thoughts and hugs.

Thanks Jeanette and Boone--very helpful! We brought Lucy home last night, and put her new memory foam bed (found on this website) near the fireplace in our living room, so my husband and I can just be in the same room with her while she sleeps (primarily).   She is being a bit fussy with food but the appetite stimulant does help, and I poached some chicken breast and made rise--she loves that with broth.  She is walking pretty well already, all things considered, and has peed pretty regularly already. Good girl!

YAAAAAAAAAY FOR HOME!!!

YAAAAAAAAAY FOR PEEING!! 🙂 🙂

Lucy is already getting arpund some, even with all the meds, so that's really good! Being picky and not eating much is sometimes for the first several days is pretty normal. Drinking and peeing are important though. She may not poop for several days either...all normal.

Just rest, rest, rest and potty breaks for now. She may be a bit restless once the hospital meds wear off and that's when you may have to tweak the pain meds to keep her comfy. It IS MAJOR surgery!

Stay connected and try and rest when you can!! You're doing great!
