So it's been 3 days since sage had his right rear leg amputated after coming home with a broken leg (snapped the bone, broken in more than 2 places)

We live on a farm and Sage is usually in the yard during the day and comes in for cuddles as he pleases and of a night...

he didn't show up the night he broke his leg and we found him as he was with no indication of how it happened apart from a large cut on the inside of his thigh

His amputation was 3 days ago he came home 2 days ago with meloxicam and anti inflammatory...he was uncomfortable and his wound was leaking clear bloodish colour fluid so we took him back for a check up

He was given a fentanyl patch and has been much better

All seems to be going well except his whole body keeps having weird twitch attacks.. mainly his face and remaining paws.

Basically my question is should I be worried about all the crazy twitching? It mainly happens while he's asleep and it didn't happen before surgery

Hi and welcome, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

Did the twitching happen before he was given the fentanyl patch? I think cats are usually given less pain meds than dogs but seems like Sage should have had something more right after surgery.

Here is a 2 Part Blog Post about pain that might help.

Sorry I have to run, I wanted to get your post approved so others could comment.  I'll check back later.

Sorry to hear Sage had to lose his leg. My cat came home an opioid painkiller, Buprenorphine and Metacam (meloxicam). I could tell when she needed the painkiller because she would get a little squirrely. The metacam would not been enough of a painkiller for her.

I noticed some slight twitches but nothing I was concerned about. It's hard to know when cats are in pain other than a change in behaviour, hiding. If you have concerns let your vet know.

The most important thing right now is pain control, ensuring the wound does not get infecting and that Sage does not scratch at or chew the stitches. It's clear sailing once the stitches are out.

I'm sorry about Sage, poor kitty.

Metacam is not enough after amputation, I'm so glad to hear he got a Fentanyl patch. Has it kicked in? How is he doing now? Any more twitching?

Twitching at the amp site is common, but I can't recall it happening in the face. Maybe that's unique to cats I'm not sure, but it would be good to observe how frequently it happens and let your vet know.

I hope he starts to feel better soon. We've had many Tripawds kitties here who live as outdoor cats after surgery. Fang, one of our oldest bloggers, is one of them, check out his blog for some inspawration.

Keep us posted OK?

Just wanted to add support. As you can see from the other suggestions, managing the pain is so crucial! This IS major surgery and it hurts!!

I'm glad your vet finally gave Sage something for the pain! The one Kerren mentioned, the Buprenophine ks the one we see on here a lot for cats.

It could be the "all over twitching" was his way of kinda' tensing up from the pain...just throwing that out there.

Let js know how he's doing. Recovery is no picnic but he will get through it...and so will you!

Hugs!
