i have a 6 year old doxy, Charlie. About a year ago Charlie started limping, I waited for it to go away but it just got worse. So we went to a doc and they told us he had a torn patella. Charlie didn't like the guy so we went elsewhere and were told the same thing  about three months later Charlie got a lump on his hind leg (the leg he limped on) so I requested an X-ray. They new doc said it was just his body trying to make his leg stable and said they want to fix his patella. We went to a third vet to get a second opinion. They set us up with a hospital that didn't want to see him before the surgery. I didn't like that so last month we went to banfield. The first thing they wanted was a biopsy. That came back as a fibersarcoma. He had his hind left leg amputated three days ago. He seemed to be doing wel the first two days, wanted his ball, carried his baby to bed and pooped. He won't eat his kibble, but will eat canned food or whatever I have he will eat. A little water but that's better than nothing. He's on tramadol and Rimadyl. He's not whining or anything but is shaking and a little cold to the touch unless he's in a blanket. The vet told me that's normal for a small dog so I'm not too concerned but I think tomorrow I'm gonna call and ask them to see him. Hoping for a good recovery soon

Welcome and best wishes for Charlie's speedy recovery!

It is still very early in his healing, and it sounds like he is doing as good as can be expected right now.

The first couple of days they still have the anesthesia in their body, so they have sort of a honeymoon period, then it's not uncommon to have a little bit of a crash.  Tramadol & Rimadyl are common to come home on, a lot of times, though, they also need Gabapentin.  Gabapentin works on the nerve endings and helps with phantom pain .  Murphy also didn't want to each much.  What I did was cook up some rice and poured chicken broth over it, then added some chunks of chicken to it.  That way he got some fluids, too.  Some try stuff like liverwurst, or canned food, whatever it takes to get them to eat.  The first 2 weeks or so are going to be the hardest time, and it's really a roller-coaster of emotions.  It will get better!

Murphy had his right front leg amputated due to histiocytic sarcoma at 7 years old. He survived 4 years, 2 months & 1 week, only to be taken by hemangiosarcoma at 11 1/2 years 6/12/17

Aww Charlie, Doxy's are soooo cute! And a tripawd Doxy, OMD! It will be impossible nkt to spoil them 24/7 because they are ADORABLE!

Yep, sounds like it's the "normal"'crash sftrr all the hospital meds are out of his system. It's important to keep the Tramadol consistent so the pain doesn't get a chance to get ahead start. Keep a lot of when the shaking and trembling start. Generally, it's a sign of pain. If it starts say sbout an hoir before the next dose, you can talk to the vet about giving the pills more frequently.

It's also very important that Charley rest and just does short potty breaks for about the first two weeks. Recovery doesn't last forever, but it does last about two weeks (more, or less). Of course, no jumping, running, etc for awhile.

I added a scoop of ice cream and swirled it around to get my Happy Hannah to drink. She never missed a meal, but she just didn't want to drink.

Can't wait to see poctures! Oh, and checkmout anithernDoxy here. Her name is Reign. Hopefully I can find her blog and give you the link.

Hugs!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
