My dogs name was mickey. he was a miniature schnauzer, neutered at 6 months. when he was 9 years old (04/14/2014) he wasdiagnosed with hemangiosarcoma. they said it had been going on for about 2 months i had caught it early. the cancer was in the humerous bone in his right front led. his leg was amputated and he went thru 6 rounds of chemo (carboplatin/diroxicubin) then he was put on metronomic therapy (cytoxin and piroxicam). he would get checkups every 3 months at the Uof M VMC hospital with an oncologist. this continued for 2 years and 6 months no evidence of spread of cancer. after this time he had surgery he had surgery to remove his gallbladder. the surgery was fine.5 weeks later i noticed he had a pink drop of urine on his bed. i took him to the vet. they said his bladder stones had returned andhe would need surgery to remove them. they had done an ultrasound on his bladder. i chose a lithotripsy and my dog would have towait a month to have the proceedure. in that month he developed sterile hemmorhagic cystitis. it is a side effect of the drug cytoxin(cyclophosphamide). i stopped the cytoxin 4 weeks too late and the damage was done. the lining of his urinary bladder was very inflamed i had to put a diaper on him he had hematuria he was peeing clots and he had a huge blood clot in his bladder. i gave him time to improve but the blood was not decreasing and he would require numerous transfusions the process could take months and he might not get better. he had one transfusion and 4 days later he would require another transfusion. i decided it was time to put him down. he had been off the cytoxin for 3 weeks and was not getting better. a necropsy was done. there was no evidence of any cancer spread. i would like to know if anyone else has had to go thru this? and if anyone has a dog that is currently on metronomic therapy that includes cytoxin please monitor your dogs urine carefully. the SHC is a nasty disease. it is sneaky, develops fast, is horrific and can be deadly.

It is so very kind of you ti take the rime to share the invaluable information you learned from Mickey's journey.

I don't have any insight into Mickey's specific situation.

I just want you to know it was clear you did EVERYTHING possible for your boy!! To beat thst stupid piece of crap disease is not something we get to celebrate around. here very often. To be victorious and then to have the side effect of the cytoxin cause problems just sucks.

When you realized Mickey could no longer enjoy being Mickey and would have to endure continuous poking a d lrodding and Vet trips, you gave him the loving gift of release. Mickey knew you loved him enough to free him from an earthly body that no longer served him.

I knkw your heart is broken. I also know you and Mickey shared thousands of happy memories and that's what he wants you to remember.

Please know how much we appreciate your post. And know that Mickey is reaching out through you and possibly saving some lives! That's an incredible legacy! His life matters to us a d clearly has made a difference to others starting the journey.

When you can, we would love to hear more about Mickey AND see some photos.

Stay connected. We understand the depth of your grief. We also understand the depth of your unbreakable bond! Mickey will always be a presence in your life.

Surrounding you with Mickey's eternal grace...

I'm so sorry. I was hoping when I started reading your post that you were asking questions about it, I didn't realize right away that Mickey has passed. What a heartbreaker, my condolences to you. Please know that you did right by him and he knew he was given a life that dogs dream about. You were a great parent to him.

Yes, we've had others with cystitis here so we sincerely appreciate your taking time to share this important warning. It's not too common, especially among male dogs, but it happens occasionally and it's tough.

It is indeed imperative that a pet parent monitors the dog extensively when on metronomics , just to ensure the pup isn't susceptible to this condition. I'm so sorry Mickey didn't do well on it, my heart goes out to you and your family. Please feel free to post pictures and tell us more about your sweet doggie.
