Thanks, Jerry/Team Tripod.

Johnnie is taking CERENIA (marpopitant citrate), 1/2 tablet per day, first thing in the morning, which means around 7am.

https://www.zoe....._home.aspx

Yesterday, during the chemo, he took it injected, and came home already medicated.   Today we started the oral medication.  It seems to work, because he hasn´t shown any nausea and is eating well.
I took him out for our daily walk in the morning, and he was quite energetic today.

If he keeps this good spirit I´m going to introduce APOCAPS and see how he reacts.  Up to now, he is only taking the K-9 Immunity Plus.  Other parents have said this in the blogs that it is a pity that APOCAPS doesn´t have a dosage for large dogs.  It´s not going to be easy to give 9 pills a day !

Ongoing treatment: acupuncture + K-9 Immunity Plus ( 3chews) and home-cooked no-grain diet.   Stopped Apocaps because of liver issues.   Liver issues: controlling altered enzymes with SAM-e and Milk Thistle.  October 17:  started having seizures.  Taking fenobarbital for seizures.  April 18: started prednisone.

That's terrific, Cerenia is a great help. Johnnie is getting fabulous care! Who is your vet? Feel free to put a shout out to the clinic in our "Veterinary Referrals" forum, you never know when we might get another member from Brazil who is looking for help.

As for Apocaps , I agree, that many pills is tough. Here are some tips that might make it easier:

So glad Johnnie is do j.g well!

I love the pictures y ou ppsted....he's just as handsomeas can be. He looks soooo gentle and sweet.

Yeah, my Happy Hannah was 120+ lbs.and had to take a whole lot of appcaps for the right amount for her size. But dogs like Johnnie have to be big to hold that big heart of theirs!

Keep on keeping o n Johnnie!

Hello to all. In the midst of all these worrysome news about Bailey and Panchito, a happy update on Johnnie.  Went for 4th round of carboplatin and exams to see if there was anything going on.  Chest X-ray and ultrasound: all clear for now.  From round 3 to round 4 of carboplatin I increased his K-9 Immunity Plus from 3 to 6 chews a day, 3 in the morning when he wakes up and 3 in the evening, before bedtime.  Blood work going well - "white series" (don't know how you call them in the U.S.) a bit on the low side but maintained the 5900 count of the former round.  Cleared for 2 more rounds of carboplatin, which means six more weeks to go before we are done with chemo.  Can't complain at all, because he has reacted very well, the only side effect are looser bowels but we have kept this more or less under control exclusively with diet.

Still not using Apocaps .  After some thought, I decided not to introduce Apocaps along with the chemo, since his "red series" is ok and Apocaps may interfere with the iron absorption.    If anyone knows of a pup that was well-succeeded using Apocaps with carboplatin, please give me the hint so I can look for posts and make contact.

Here's a new picture: Johnnie with mom's hat.

Also changed my avatar picture.  After all, it is still winter here.  No sunglasses for now.

Awww bravo! This is great news! We sure needed that around here, thank you. Love the pic too.

Have you considered calling the K9 Immunity toll-free phone number (I think it will work internationally) to ask about how it works with Apocaps ? They are pretty up on Apocaps and I think they would be able to tell you if there are any risks to using it.

It's GREAT NEWS like this that is an absolute MUST to hear!!! We need to have reasons to celebrate! And goodness knows, this update is a great reason to celebrate!!!

And Johnnie looks stunning stylin' his handsome red hat!!! And I like his "handsomeness" shining through on his new avatar picture!

I dont recall all the details of Jonnie'specific "diagnosis", but I was just wondering what the thought process was of his Onco. to proceed with six treatments
There was a great discussion started by Jackson's mom about four, versus five or six. Again, every case is different and every dog is different. I'm not computer savvy enough to tel you how to find it.

Back to the celebratio pawty!!! I certainly hope Johnnie got some extra goodies with just a small bit of junk food to make this wonderful victory even more special!!

Thamnks for sharing some good news with us today!! Uplifting to all of us!

Keep on keeping on Johnnie! You are doing great!clap

HUGS AND LOVE!!

Update on Johnnie.

Had 5th round of carboplatin last week, blood works were fine.

For the first time, we had a little "bump in the road" : an ear infection ( otitis ), which is already being treated.  The onco says it is normal for these infections to settle in because of the lowered immunity after the chemo.

Of course, the guilt factor came in strong, because on Saturday Johnnie went swimming in the pool with daddy, and mommy decided to give him a good shampoo scrub - the first real bath since his amp, which means 4 months of doggie odor.  It was a warm day, so we towel-dried him (4 towels) and in the late afternoon did the classical finishing with the blow-dryer.  He wasn't very cooperative, especially when I blowed close to his ear on his non-amp side.  On Sunday the ear was very dirty, I did a thorough cleaning, and Monday evening it was equally dirty.   Tuesday, less dirty but a bit red inside.  He hasn't been shaking his head or showing any discomfort, but I contacted the onco anyway, telling her of my suspicion of an infection.  She agreed with my mommy diagnosis and prescribed an antibiotic lotion for 10 days - 8 drops, twice a day.  Not sure how to count the "drops" because it looks more like a gooey syrup than a lotion, but anyways....

Even though Johnnie has always been a regular swimmer, this is his 2nd ear infection ever.  With summer round the corner in the Southern hemisphere, this is a new factor I have to take into account, because swimming is by far his favorite activity.

Countdown for the sixth/last round of chemo, scheduled for Tuesday October 7th.  Already thinking of the after-chemo.

Daniela,

Sounds like Johnnie is doing ok even with the ear infection. Can a dog use ear plugs or a bathing cap?? You keep a close watch on him. Good luck with his last round of chemo.

Awwww.....good update on such a sweet boy! Sooooo glad he's thoroughly enjoying himself...bath and all!!

Sorry about the ear owwee, but I'm sure Johnnie doesn't mind just as long as he can go swimming!! Since chemo can lower the immune system, it could be that once the chemo is over he won't have a recurrence anyway!

Would love to see some videos of Johnnie swimming....or doing anything....he's just so darn cute we need more of him!!!

Thanks for the update and we look forward to more great posts......and pics!

Hugs and a good ear scratch!

Daniela and Johnnie,

I just started reading your journey with osteo.  What a trooper Johnnie is and man he is handling his chemo like a champ. We could only do 5 and with Bailey I (I know looking back, bad girl!) wish we would have only did 4.  But tomorrow I am going to take more time to read and look at all the wonderful pictures.  It's amazing the connections we make from a web site... love it.

You have supported us and I'm here to support you... it sounds like Johnnie is leading the pack and I'm very happy for him.  Stay strong Johnnie Boy... summer is coming and you're going to show Mum you can swim away!!! (can you get ear plugs?

Thanks for updating so I could read all about Johnnie.

Love and tight hugs!

Tracy and Bailey

P.S. Bailey hates water... when we would try to shower her you would think she was getting murdered... I would be in there with her and it's a walk in so you think she would be ok with it... no mam!  So she's had sponge baths every since her surgery.  Plus under carriage wipe after outside potty breaks!  way-cool

Hi everyone.

Just got an e-mail from Johnnie's vet surgeon, to share that he will use Johnnie's photo swimming as the closing photo of his presentation at the IV Brazilian Congress of Veterinary Surgery.

He sent me a very kind e-mail with a photo of his laptop showing the closing slide of his presentation - see link below.
