Good morning,  I just found this forum so I thought I would share about our Cody.  Sorry if it gets a bit long but my heart is heavy today...  maybe some writing will help.

We had just lost our Sasha Dog to old age.  My heart was so broken.  While I wasn't ready for a new dog I was looking through available rescues.  I found it healing to know that I would give a dog a forever home one day.  With my heart shut down I looked through many  pictures of homeless dogs.  Then I saw the the sweetest face I had ever seen.  His eyes looked right at me and I knew in that second that he would be a part of our family.  I clicked on his picture and read about Cody's life.

Cody was found on the living on streets of Jaurez,  Mexico.  A rescue named Compassion Without Borders had found him.  He was in poor shape. His front left leg was badly broken and infected.  They took him in and amputated his leg.  After he was all healed he was sent to a rescue in California for adoption.  That's when we found each other.

We had to go through quite a process to bring Cody home.  We had visits, home visits,  contracts,  waiting periods,  etc.  On March 14,  2011 Cody officially joined our family.  Cody is such a source of joy to us and everyone who meets him.  He is always a hit at BBQs and the beach.  People truly gravitate to him.  His smile and joyful spirit are contagious.  He gets along just fine.  Often at the beach people will say "whoa that dog is fast,  I had no idea he had only 3 legs"

Four weeks ago our worst fear became reality.  Cody was running in a field and injured his right front leg.  I'm not quite sure what happened,  I'm guessing his foot went in a gopher hole.  We rushed him to the Vet.  There were no fractures or breaks (although they did find many old healed fractures from his days on the streets).  He had soft tissue damage.  The vet prescribed pain meds and rest.  After a week he was not getting better.  He was getting round on his hind legs and would not put any weight on his front.  To help in healing we went to a new vet that offered laser treatments.  When that didn't help we went to a joint specialist and he put a splint on for 10 days.  We had high hopes the day we removed the splint but no luck.  He isn't in pain but he still wont use his front leg.  We are now considering a custom splint or possibly a bone fusion surgery.

I am so sad for him.  He seems quite depressed.  I don't know what we'll do if he can never run at the beach again.  I need to keep the faith that this chapter in Cody's life will have a happy ending too.

Thank you for taking the time to get to know Cody.  I hope to find some advice here on Tripawd that might help us.  Have a great day!

Hi there, and welcome to the best support group in the world.......
So sorry for the loss of your beloved Sasha, and so glad you were able to welcome a sweet rescued pup from the brutal streets while your heart was still aching from your loss. This surely is one fortunate pup to have a home with you.

Unfortunately, I do not have any experience with this difficult situation regarding Cody.... However, I really think it can be healed with time, and whatever the decision is to treat it. You seem to have researched and discussed this in full with your vets, and with the options available, I do believe Cody will be fine. He survived the awful streets in Mexico when he was found, so I have no doubt he will be a champ through this bump in the road.

Keeping you in my thoughts for a definitive resolution for sweet Cody,

P.S. I had a very sweet black Lab Maggie a few years ago, that severely damaged her hip tendons and ligaments when she was very young when running around with another pup friend....I thought she would never walk again on her back leg (she was not a Tripawd, though)...she had to be leash walked to ONLY go potty for close to 4 months. (REALLY difficult to keep a 6 month old Lab from running around like a nut!!) with a regime of complete rest, Rimadyl, and starting cosequin for the rest of her life, she did heal completely, and was able to run around again like nothing was wrong, and did so up until she got sick and passed away. I know this is a bit different because she wasn't a Tripawd, but with her severe injury, she was able to heal completely.

Hi there! I'm both elated to know that Cody found good people like you and sad to hear what you're going through, I'm so sorry.

If you're in CA I'm betting you have access to an orthopedic specialist? You didn't mention if your docs are board-certified orthos, if they aren't, that would be my next move, along with a rehab vet therapist. Are you anywhere near UC Davis? They have an awesome ortho department there and that would be my first choice in this situation.

Here is an article about managing soft-tissue damage that will help alleviate your mind I hope, and of course help Cody too:

Hang in there, this can get better! Let us know what you do next OK?

Hi,

I don't have any experience with what you describe is going on with Cody.  It's so hard when our beloved Tripawds are in  pain and it sounds like Cody has had his share with living on the streets of Mexico.  It's possible that one of his old injuries was aggravated (you mentioned he had several healed fractures in the remaining front leg).

Since the problem can't be pinpointed by the vets you have to go through the process of elimination to see what helps Cody.

I just wanted to let you and Cody know that I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and pray that you and the vets find what helps Cody.
