Hi Everyone,

Etta had her second treatment of doxorubicin a little more than a week and a half ago and its been a rough ride.  She has finally stopped throwing up after about 5 days.  She has also been on nausea meds consistently and I think things could have been significantly worse if she wasn't on them.  However, Last night I noticed that Etta wet the bed.  This is something that she has never done before.  She didn't empty her bladder, its almost like a heavy leak (sorry for the visuals).

Anyway, this has happened several more times today and I was just wondering if anyone else has seen something similar with their babies?  Also, she is doing this wierd tail wagging thing.  It's almost like she wags her tail at strange times or times you wouldnt think she would wag it... Makes me wonder if there is something neurological going on...

She is seeing her oncologist on Tuesday and I will take her in sooner if things progress but any thoughts on this would be most appreciated...

Our angel "Etta" amputation on 4-15-10 lost her front limb. initially dx'd with neurofibrosarcoma. However, after surgery they discovered histiocytic sarcoma a very aggressive cancer. After two full rounds of chemo our special angel lost her battle on 6-21-10. the sweetest and most gentle soul. Our lives are forever blessed for having known her...

Oh poor Etta, we are so sorry. Side effects during chemo are rare, we're so sad that she's been experiencing them.

In a Google search I just did, incontinence is listed as a rare side effect of doxorubicin. But I'm not a vet, so I owuld call and ask your vet to talk about this. I hae no idea what the tail wagging could indicate.

If you feel uncomfortable, don't delay, call and take her in, it'll make you feel better even if its not serious. Which of course, we hope it isn't.

Good luck. Keep us posted OK?

etta, sounds like you are in a real rough patch!!  gayle did five rounds of doxorubicin.  four of the five times, the day she did the treatment, she was so full of IV fluids, that when she napped, she had the dribbles..but that passed after the first 24 hours.  no other incontinence issues for her.  maybe it's the nausea meds?? is it cerenia?  this might be a "pam question".  hope you get to feeling better soon!!

Life is good, so very, very good!!! Gayle enjoyed each and every moment of each and every wonderful day (naps included).  She left this world December 12, 2011 – off on a new adventure.

I was also wondering about the nausea meds... I am going to call them tomorrow when they open.  She is on the generic form of Zofran and takes it twice a day since she started Chemo.  Actually, because she continues to vomit the doc was thinking about adding cerenia to the zofran.

She vomitted this morning but that was because I prematurely switched her back to her regular food...  Won't be doing that again anytime soon ; /   We also noticed that she isn't drinking much and I have been hand feeding her gatorade diluted with water or diluted chicken broth and she really likes both of those...   oy vey!  Thanks all for your responses... I will update when I know more...  julie

We haven't had this issue, and Holly didn't have Doxorubicin, but we just wanted to chime in to say we're pulling for you, Etta.  We hope the vet has some good suggestions, and that you can get past this quickly.  Keeping all paws (7 of them!) and fingers crossed for you.

Sending lots of hugs,

Holly and Zuzu and Susan

Holly joined the world of tripawds on 12/29/2009. She has a big little sister, Zuzu, who idolizes Holly and tries to make all of her toys into tripawds in Holly's honor. And she's enjoying life one hop at a time!

Hi Julie,

I hope Etta feels better....this chemo treatment can be pretty rough at times.  Sorry to hear that Etta's going through this.   On the anti-nausea meds, my oncologist (Dr. Davis - maybe you're seeing her too?)  prescribed both Zofran and Cerrenia for Mackenzie because she had pretty bad side effects - nausea and loss of appetite.  I also gave her these ginger supplements that was recommended by Dr. Davis too.   Also was wondering if Etta was given an injection of Zofran before her treatment.  They did that with Mackenzie but she was doing carboplatin  not doxorubicin so don't know if they do the same things.  I found that most dogs on this website have been prescribed Cerrenia as the first anti-nausea med.  Dr. Davis however has a different protocol where Zofran is prescribed first and then if Cerrenia is needed she'll add that.

Good luck with your appt.  Will be keeping our paws crossed that Etta feels better.

Kami (Mackenzie's Mom)

My sweet golden Mackenzie.  She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2  although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home.  She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009.  She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes.  I love you Mackenzie!

Kami, Dr Davis is Etta's doctor too!  She told us the same info on the phone so i have a feeling we will be on that protocol too...  I will ask her about the ginger as well...

Thanks everyone for the tips and support!  julie

Magic started having the leakage .... I don't remember when...I would have to go find the post to see when...probably a couple of weeks ago...Thanks to Karen (Spirit Maggie's mom) I INSISTED the doc put him on proin....Pam doesn't much like it any more than my doc really did, but I think it is helping...we went five days dry then when the blood in the urine started so did the leakage again....I give a half pill morning, noon and a whole one at night which doesn't help much because I don't have the bottle in front of me for dosage.  The doc said we were still on a real low dosage and the option to do a half or a whole one.

We have so many different things going on with Magic, I'm not sure I can say whether the pill is responsible for dry days or not...I have now limited him to being on the foam pads that have zip on rubber covers and I cover that with old sheets (rather than the zip covers) that I can whip off and throw in the wash...If he is standing he can be anywhere (until that becomes a problem) or he can lay in the kitchen.  But unless he has JUST gone out, he is limited (which I'm sure puzzles him).  He is also on pred. which makes him drink, but he has always been a drinker (of water!)  Sometimes I think it is because for HIM it    is difficult sometimes to get OFF the pads but I think it is more comfy for him so if I have to wash then so be it.  When he goes outside he sometimes pees three or four times...lots.

Don't know if this helps or not...he also takes cerenia and is back on carafate to stop the black barf.  It all seems to work ok.  When he did the chemos that didn't work, they always gave a cerenia shot first and I gave the cerenia before the pills I did here at home.  The one day I DIDN'T, we had a lot of throwing up.  I think cerenia is a miracle drug or was for us.

Good luck!

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to give you all an update:  Etta saw Dr. Davis today at VCG and we still don't know exactly what's up but here is what we do know.  Etta seems to be in a lot of pain around the base of her tail as well as her right back knee (torn cruciate).  It may be as simple as a muscle strain.  They also took a urine sample to check for a UTI...  It's good news if thats whats causing all the problems.

However, it could also be signs of a new tumor possibly in her brain or spine or some other place.  We knew we had quite an uphill battle ahead of us so the news of course was not shocking.  Regardless, we remain hopeful.

In the meantime,  Etta will have her Chemo tx tomorrow and she will also have added G.I. support with a new rx of celenia to go with her zofran and also the ginger supplement that Mack's mom talked about (thanks Kami!).  She is also on heavy duty pain meds... we are back on the trammadol and also gabepentin.  She will continue on her deramax as well...

She goes back in a couple of weeks for a re-check.. She will probably do some xrays at that point and maybe an ultrasound.. We will keep her off her paws as much as possible and hopefully she will feel better!

Thanks again for all the well wishes and support!!!!  julie
