Although I lost my Otis much sooner than I expected, the amputation was absolutely the right decision.  We had almost seven great months together.  The first two weeks of recovery were hard, but his overall quality of life was worth it (and honestly, it was worth it even if we had had less time together than we did).  Your wife and friend will do great, Mr. Gibbs will surprise you with how well he adjusts to life as a Tripawd, and you will get through the biz trip and be home soon.smiley

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

I know it's REALLY hard but try to remember, if you already see it as being a bad day, so it shall be. We create our own reality.

Instead, keep envisioning how relieved he will be to get rid of that bum leg, and how glad you'll feel to be able to move forward instead of waiting in dread for this day. You can do it! We'll be here to help.

Here's a post about adding images to the forums. If you'd like assistance just PM me OK?

We're sending lots of pawsitivity your way, keep us posted.

Ok today is the day. We will be taking him in this morning. I will be a wreck all day but know it is best as he seems to be in a lot of pain this morning. Thank you all for your advice and warm thoughts.  I will keep you updated as the day wears on.

We are all thinking of you. Just think how relieved Mr Gibbs will be to be rid of that pain. You can be strong for him and we are all here to support you.

Best wishes,

Shelby Lynne; Jack Russell/Shiba Inu mix. Proud member of the April Angels of 2014.

October 15, 2000 to April 8, 2014

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

He is there now. I almost went back to get him but knew that would really not help in anyway. May need some advice once we get him back home concerning many things.

His heart and soul is still the same!  Look in his eyes and celebrate that he is still here with you- don't focus on the leg.  He needs you to be strong and positive so he knows that you still love him and that everything is OK.

Gibbs is home now. The incision is way far bigger than I thought it would be. He is resting right now and we are keeping a close eye on him. Will make a nice floor bed tonight and sleep with him. He is pretty heavily drugged and hope tomorrow will bring him a better day. Rough day on us all. Thank goodness my wife is with us on this journey.  Mr Gibbs loves her so much.  Thanks all.

Yay for being home!

Be aware that when pups come home the same day of surgery they can get very vocal when they are coming off of the surgery meds.

Good luck tonight- I'm sending strong and peaceful thoughts for a quiet night!
