CharlieBear 1
Vet School 0

So the intrepid Bear had his diagnostic recheck appointment at the Vet School yesterday. I finally saw the reports from December 7 which stated that his CT was normal, his EMG was normal, and his MRI ( of spinal cord, spinal nerves, brachial plexus nerves) appears normal.

They wrote, " No obvious impingement of nerves is seen, though nerves do course through his lipoma. Mild compression of inter thoracic trachea. (Two years ago, the infiltrative lipoma literally moved his trachea to one side of his neck: it looked like an oxbow river. But then we had debulking surgery so this "mild compression" is good news, it seems.)

So...and I quote the report here, " CharlieBear's case is very complicated." CharlieBear and I had to laugh at that one..after decades of cases at the Vet School, this was a new one:)

" It is assumed he is painful since he is limping but no one [ortho, neuro, onco, radiology oncology, soft tissue surgery, emergency] has been able to determine the source of his pain. Our orthopedists and neurologists have been unable to elicit any pain. His CT, MRI, and EMG did not show any obvious nerve impingement, infiltration of the nerves, or evidence of functional disruption secondary to the the lipoma."

Pain meds, major or lesser debulking surgery, and radiation were mentioned on the 7th but when I talked to our go to oncologist before Christmas, she said that maybe we just watch and wait and take more images in a few months.

So yesterday we had a neuro appointment ( onco's husband is head of neuro) and after the a bit of poking and prodding the latest recommendation is: do nothing. (I know that my onco, her husband, and even Da Bear's previous surgeon had been debating his case for weeks.)

So in less than a month we heard amputate now, then open his chest debulking, then wait and image more frequently and monitor to : DO NOTHING!

I feel like we are in a " House" episode...but completely understand their dilemma and agree that there really is not much TO do at this point ( if you can think of anything, or questions I should have asked, or solve the case, I am sure there is a cash prize involved!)

BUT!!!

CHARLIEBEAR THE WONDERPYR has been released from their care with no follow up needed!

We have tinkered with his pain meds and still continue to do so and they recommended losing the tramadol and adding amitriptyline. He will stay on the meds the rest of his life.

He did have a swollen lymph node (on that leg) which they aspirated but that is highly likely due to inflammation and the sample will likely be full of fat.

CharlieBear has stumped the best of the best and now gets to be left in peace in his pasture with his pony and his BFF EmmaRose!

Sooo...I am hoping that CharlieBear can be nominated as an honorary TriPyr TriPawd because we sure would like to continue to hang around you guys. ( And, if you do the maths, Heffalump ended up with two legs and CharlieBear gets to keep all-both highly unexpected- so that averages to three:)

Love you guys! And that is some of the first happy news of 2017!!!

Best wishes, hugs, and PyrPaws all around!!!

CharlieBear you are a true ONE AND ONLY! No wonder they can't work out what's the matter. They have never met a CharlieBear before. They will never meet a CharlieBear again. There is only one CharlieBear!

its great news that they don't want to do anything and have elected to leave Da Bear alone and let get on and enjoy his Beary Love-filled life.

Here's to you and CharlieBear and no complicated mathematics required to know that you belong amongst the Tripawd family and we are honoured to have you.

Sending big bear hugs,

Meg, Clare and Elsie Pie xxx

Wow, it sure does sound like an episode of 'House'! It's great he'll get to keep the leg! I hope you'll do ok with the meds.

Big shout-out from Manni,

Yep, once you join the site, you are family, no matter how many legs you have.  Must be frustrating to not have a solution, or even a diagnosis, but hopefully, the adjustments to pain meds will help.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

What awesome news!  So happy for you and CharlieBear.

Otis - 121 lbs pre amp - 114 lbs post amp and now 118 lb Great Dane - English Mastiff X.  Started limping on 12/24/16.  Diagnosed with Osteosarcoma 12/28/16 - amputation of front left leg on 1/6/17.  Stitches out and 1st round of Chemo on 1/19/17.   2nd round of Carboplatin on 2/10/17 - 3rd round on 3/2/2017.  4th round was scheduled for 3/22/17 - however due to low WBC postponed - 4th Chemo completed on 3/28/17.  Had breathing difficulties, stayed in Tufts ICU overnight.  Due for 2 more rounds of Chemo but we are opting to go with homeopathy with Dr. Loops instead.

Thanks for the flashback to HOUSE!!! Looooved that show!!!

I know this has been exhausting, to say the least! But to just let CharlieBear be CharlieBear and be free from all that poking and prodding seems like great "treatment"!

I love how you did the "math" to get to the "tripawd designation"! Clever! But NOT necessary at all!!! You and CharlieBear are family now!! And itsw always good news when a family member can keep all four legs!!

Yep, you HAVE to stay with us now! You add so much support and compassion, we need you to stay, okay? And besides, we love hearing about CharlieBear (and Heffalump too) and all your pack!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

PICTURES are required on occasion though!!!

I think you can FINALLY take a big sigh of relief and jump into the joy of being in the NOW with CharlieBear! 🙂 🙂

Love and hugs!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Yay! CharlieBear, you are amazing! And yes...we do have a number of honorary Tripawds here. Welcome to the club!

Kathi and the Turbotail April Angel...and the Labradork

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

Hooooorrrraaaay! Boy we needed this news today CharlieBear, thank you for brightening our morning. WOOOHOOO! clap

And yes, of COURSE you can stick around and be an Honorary Tripawd, we just wouldn't be the same without you here. Your case is So unusual and I guarantee there will be someone in a similar situation some day, who needs to know that even when scientists have no answers, there can be good things that come of it. Thank you for contributing to this community in such an important way.

That is great news.  Of course you are part of the family.  You can join Chuck (Saint Bernard who is now at the bridge) who was an honorary Tripawd.  Chuck wasn't a good candidate for amputation for Osteoscaroma because of other health issues.

Yay extra treats for Charliebear.

hugs
