Ingrid, I had a good little chuckle visualizing your husband having a "come to Jessis mome t" with the vet after that beer comment!

You two are SPECTACULAR ADVOCATES for Nixon! I sincerely applaud you for your strength and determination when it comes to being his voice.

As far as what I was feeding Mickey Motto, as best I can recall:

*carbs...a lolt of pasta, cooked oatmeal, etc...
*low to moderate protein...that could come from plant based soy as well as cottage cheese, eggs, white fish, turkey, tec.
*If I recall the vet advised against salt as that supposedly caused some of the fluid build-up.
* several small meals a day

Ive forgotten the vitamins suggested, but I think it was a B Complex, K and E.

Did it help? I don't know. But I felt like I was causing "no narm" and doing "something" since I knew I woukd not put him through any invasive procedures. He thoroughly enjoyed lapping up all the "specialness" I made up just for him. Every dog is different, but for Mickey Motto, he maintained good quality almost the entire time. As he readied himself for transition, the "yellow" in his eyes and gums came on fairly quickly and he was ready.

Sending all the best tonyiu and all yiur lack!

Extra hugs to Nixon and Cookie too!! I bet Nixon looks like an advertisement for all the uses of a Sharpie! I'm sure the company isn't aware of this use!

XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX

Thinking of you and Nixon!!! You are giving him such loving care-he is a very fortunate greyhound to be part of your family!! I've been following your posts, and I totally understand your concern about greyhounds. They are such wonderful furbabies, but they handle some things differently-that's always been my worry about Lily. Please give Nixon a huge hug from Lily and me-sending Nixon healing thoughts.

Thinking of you,

Joan and Lily

Our beautiful Lily was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her front leg on 12/14/11 at age 8 and had amp on 12/16/11. She completed 5 rounds of carbo. She was so brave and kicked cancer's butt daily! She lived life fully for 4 years, 3 months, and 15 days after her amp. My angel is a warrior princess. I miss her so much.

Joan and Lily...thank you. You have a 39 month ampuversary on Monday! Congrats!

Sally, we are feeding boneless and skinless chicken, poached or hard boiled eggs, low fat cottage cheese, pumpkin, green veggies, and berries . I will be adding barley and oatmeal to his diet. Not sure if i am going to try total cereal. I used total for my first greyhound when she was having issues with her kidneys. She ate satin balls most of the time because her sense of smell was going. What we didn't know was she had osteo too.

So, today's Nixon status. He is doing better. He has lost about 4 inches off his belly. He has had no big interest in water other than rinsing his mouth out for the past 3 days. I have been checking him for dehydration, his resting heart rate, and respiratory rate. All normal. Dr. Huff called me after work on his cell phone to check in. He said that Nixon probably is well hydrated as he is apparently absorbing the fluid. Nixon is urinating every two to three hours and it takes some time for him to finish. He has been more active today than he has been in a month! He has been off since he went on Previcox on 2/12. Granted, he could not walk when we put him on the Previcox so it did help.

He had real poop this morning! He has been feeling good enough to patrol the house today and every time the door bell rang, he was investigating. It has been a month since he did this. We only have two beds out right now (the formula for proper # of beds is n + 1 where n = the total number of dogs in the house) and he kept making Cookie move every time he came in from the backyard. Cookie is just happy and playing with toys again. Nixon refused to eat in bed today and wants to eat in the kitchen with Cookie.

The bruising on his neck has finally stopped. Dr. Huff is going to do the clotting test on Monday and probably run another panel. We debated doing it tomorrow but he said give him the weekend off.

Interesting about keeping him hydrated by reabsorbing the fluids...makes sense.

I'm so happy to hear he's getting up and walking around and being so engaged. Cookie, sorry he nudges you off the bed, but it's another good sign t h at he's feeling bettrr.

Sally, THANK YOU for getting my twisted sense of humor.  Even when things are exploding around me, I always like to flip  the world around to  find something to laugh about, even if it is how I'm not handling the situation, and I'm glad you're laughing with me!

I am a very bad, BAD, and evil mommy.  It is rare that I ever cook the same dish twice for lunch or dinner.  I think I have about 10  dishes that I make several times a year.  The rest of the time, it is ALWAYS something new.  My husband is used to being experimented on.  Nixon, not so much. I'm following the diet from Lew Olson's book.

So...he liked spinach so much, lets make life easy on me and use canned mix greens since I haven't slept much this week and the 12 hour shifts at work take it out of me.  Low sodium (10 mg) and I don't have to cook so much.  Well, he ate breakfast under protest.  I even tried hand feeding him the 1/4 of a cup he left and he tasted the greens that have contaminated the entire meal and gave me a look.  "Seriously human?"

So I have 2 lbs of food he doesn't want to eat much of.  I tried some chicken and cottage cheese and he is enthusiastic to eat that, just not the oatmeal, pumpkin, mixed greens, egg, ground turkey, and yogurt meal I made him.  I get off of work in 2 hours and will be cooking up a fresh batch of food for him.  And really, I'm going to try to mix some of the yuck with the tastier stuff in hopes he'll eat it.  Don't even ask about Cookie eating this.  She has already provided unflattering commentary to me and Nixon, "How can you eat that crap?"  Nixon just replied, "Hater."

I also gave myself a heart attack last night because I feed him spinach.  It went right through him and at midnight, in the dark, in the rain, it was hard to tell that it wasn't blood.  Now, it didn't smell like a dog with liver failure pooping tar but it still scared me and I brought it inside to the light.  So at 1 AM, dripping from the rain, I'm exploring his scat like a field biologist.  Nothing but fun in our house!  big-grin

Last time I measured him, he lost another inch off his belly.  It is a cold and rainy day so both puppies are under blankies and sleeping.  Nixon is under MY throw, not one of his dozen, and just happy.  I guess he's been feeling like crap the entire time we had him on Previcox.  We noticed a sharp decline in him between 2/10 and 2/12, and not just the physical injury.  Everything about him dulled but we attributed that to pain.  On 3/1, we had company over and he never got up to say hello to anyone.  He probably was collecting fluid by then as we noticed his abdomen wasn't right on tuesday.  Wednesday he went from 58.8 to 65.6.  Then Sunday, he was 70.8.  We'll get him on a scale on Monday and we'll see how he's doing.

The last round of bloodwork does show a drop in liver enzymes.  TP is still low, ALB is still 1.9, ALT went from mid 800's to 547.  ALKP went from 400's to 258.  So he's still high.

Bile Acids are not good but no one has told me what level his liver is performing at.

Pre Meal Bile Acids 38.2 umol/L

Post Meal Bile Acids 95.9 umol/L

Normal is 10 for Pre and 20 for Post.

FASTING BILE ACID CONCENTRATIONS

Elevated fasting bile acid concentrations can occur with inadequate fasting, spontaneous gall bladder contraction and with hepatobiliary disease. The probability of hepatobiliary disease increases when fasting bile acids exceed 25 umol/ L.  Fasting bile acids may be higher than those of postprandial samples. Potential causes include gall bladder contraction and delayed gastric emptying. If either result exceeds 25 umol/L, abnormal liver function should be considered.

POSTPRANDIAL BILE ACID CONCENTRATIONS

Elevated postprandial bile acids are supportive of hepatobiliary disease. The majority of animals with  congenital or acquired portosystemic shunting have markedly increased postprandial values (>100 umol/L).

Oh yeah, I'm your "Twisted Sista'" alright! I adore your wit!

And, of course, visualizing you at 1 am bringing in spi ach laden poop to make sure it is indeed dark green and no blodd.....yeah, sounds normal to me!

Nixon taking over your blankie and ignoring his...yeah, that's what Diva's do!

I love the thought bubbles you attribute to Nixon and Cookie. And I have no doubt they are spot on too!

Ingrid, I could never say this enough, you are a SPECTACULAR ADVOCATE for your dogs! You are knowledgeable and know your dogs as though you speak their language and they speak yours. Your bond is beautiful and truly soul deep.

And we have something to celebrate! YAAAAAAAAAY for losing another inch!! Good job Nixon! And you are seeing some improvement in som eof the work up...that really is good news!!!clap

Good luck with mixing in some of the "yuck" and trying to slip it by Nixon. I bet if you topped it with a scoop of ice cream he might eat it!!

Try and get some rest Ingrid. Seriously, youve got a lot on you andnyou cantw be getting much sleep, especially if you're trolling behind Nixon everytime he poops at 1 am!!

"Sending lots of healing love!

OMD, YOU a bad Momma? NOT! You are amazing, I can't believe you cook like that for everyone. And go out and poke around in poop at 1 am in the rain? Yowza! You get the Mom of the Year Award, lady!

Thanks for the tip on the book, I hadn't seen that one before but have heard of B-Naturals. Don't know how I missed it.

Glad everything is going well. Whew! Here's to continued improvement.

I am going to do my best to not make this post contain TMI but it is a delicate subject.  First and foremost, Nix is doing better.

Nixon's last round of blood work on Monday came back with slight improvements.  TP is up.  Globulin is up a lot.  Albumin is up 0.1 BUT it is moving up.  Just to try to help him along, the vet prescribed him Metronidazole and Lactulose.  Dr. Williams, the physical therapist, says that Previcox is not known for causing liver issues BUT if you already have a compromised liver, any issues show up within 4 weeks of starting it, typically around week 2.  Nixon started it on 2/12 and he started showing visible fluid in his belly on 3/2.  Dr. Williams is hopeful since he responded so quickly after coming off the previcox that it did cause the current issue.  We still need a biopsy though to really know what is happening.

Now the gross part.  On Tuesday night, our neighbors came over to see if we were having any issues with our water or anything else.  They rent the property and have had a lot of problems with the rental company not being responsible and their septic tank is leaking raw sewage.  It runs into our backyard.  The week before, they had just spent at the emergency vet with their dogs, with one having seizures.  Diagnoses was a severe bacterial infection.

We weren't supposed to be home on Tuesday.  We had plans but do to GI symptoms in EVERY family member, we stayed home.  Even Cookie was under the weather.  I have been battling tummy trouble off and on since March 4th.  I thought I had e. coli but it wasn't quite violent enough.  My husband has been sick off and on since the 13th.  Nixon was already having belly swelling by the 4th but the assplosions started around March 5th.  There had also been a lot of rain and our entire property was a bog.  He got better once I was feeding him food with a very high moisture content and he had stopped drinking water during that time.  Diarrhea returned (with some vomiting) on Monday for Nixon after he started drinking water again.

The health department is involved.  A new septic is going in within the next 60 days.  My husband and I are off to the doctor this AM to see if they can figure out what protozoal infection we probably have.  Our water pipes are under where the septic is running off so there is a possibility that stuff is leaking into our water supply.  OR it is just running off into our backyard.  Things like Giardia like moist areas.

I have sent word to our vet about what we've found out but have not actually talked with him.  We're using a lot of hand sanitizer and using bottled water for everything.  Nixon and Cookie are doing pretty good right now.  My husband and I are not getting any worse or any better.  We're looking forward to sleeping an entire night through.  My number one problem is mental.  I am so grossed out about the possibility of drinking raw sewage.  Its one thing for us to have walked through it and tracked it into the house but if we drank it, that just kind of pushes me over the edge.

Oh wow, I am glad you may have found a good reason for all the illness, Nixon and Cookie included, but I completely agree with you, this possible sewage problem would send me over the edge too.......and I agree, giardia is a strong possibility, but I am sure your Drs will know how to check for whatever the problems are and help you to feel better soon.

Glad Nixon is improving, and I will keep you, him, and the rest of your family in my thoughts and prayers.....
Let us know any updates and I do hope you all are feeling much better soon.

HOLY TOLEDO BATMAN!!!!! UGH!! No, your #1 problems isn't mental, your #1 problem is #2!!clown Sorry, couldn't resist!

I am soooooo sorry this is going on. But man oh man, it could explain ALMOST EVERYTHING that's causing so much ...er...crap in your household!

Looks like the rental company will be paying dearly for this!

I really am glad Nixon is doing better! That's certainly the silver lining in all this! How many j nches has he lost overall now?

Really hoping everything gets resolved quickly as far as the septic issue. I would think more like six days as opposed to sixty days!

All paws crossed for am co tinued healing with Nixon.....and a good night's sleep for all!

Love!

Thanks Bonnie.

Just got back from the Doctor.  The cultures won't be back till next Wednesday or Thursday but we asked to be put on Metronidazole as it treats most protozoal infections.  We can start it tonight.

I need to call the vet and see if they have access to IDEXX SNAP Giardia tests.  Nixon and Cookie don't have any tummy trouble right now.  Cookie is a very healthy dog but I'm wondering if we all should be on Metronidazole for a week.
