Murphy has been a right front leg tripawd for almost 23 months (he was diagnosed with histiocytic sarcoma when he was 7 years old).  We normally are really careful with him - he wears his ruff wear harness when he goes in the car so we can use the handle to get him out, and I always worry about his front leg when he jumps off the furniture.  But he is an active dog and loves to be outside and hasn't let anything get him down.  He can chase squirrels and dig under the wood pile for mice with the best of them! lol  But we live in Michigan and this winter hasn't been a good one.  We shovel our back deck and make sure that the one step is cleared off so he can see it, so that's not the problem...but apparently the bright sunshine we've been getting during the day has been enough to melt some of the snow that of course just re-froze, and when he ran out today his legs all slipped out from under him.  My husband said you could tell that it hurt and he stopped, got back up and tried to go out more but then stopped and hopped back towards the door.  He ended up picking him up and carrying him inside, which isn't easy since he's 50 lbs.  It seems like his left front wrist area is bothering him...it doesn't feel swollen, but he does kind of pull away when I feel it..I tried wrapping it for awhile, and we gave him a Rimadyl.  We put his harness on for my husband to take him outside before bed and he went out, but you can tell it's hurting him.  It just bothers me that we try so hard to keep him safe and he still gets hurt and I knew I could come here to vent and you guys would all understand sad

Thanks for listening!

Oh, I am sorry this happened. This stupid ice seems like it will never melt and stay melted. Hopefully he will be back to his old self in a day or 2. I guess we get a bit sore when we slip on the ice too. It is just so hard to always protect them. So hard not to worry. 23 months, that is awesome! Hang in there, you are doing everything you can to keep him safe, while still letting him be himself. Hugs, Lori, Ty & the canine 3

TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed  and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.

You can always "vent" here because we DO understand and we know how hard you work to keep him safe!

Thanks for listening!

We left Murphy's harness on him all night in case he needed help getting up, that way we didn't need to struggle getting it on him this morning.  He must have slept ok because he didn't wake me up at all (I wake up pretty easily).  This morning he went out on his own and seemed to hop pretty well.   I had to leave for a little bit and when I got home he jumped up on me like he normally does and ran out the back door just like usual.  All with no pain meds today.  So I guess I was worried for nothing big-grin

Thanks again!

From one Murphy to another....QUIT SCARING YOUR MOMMA!!! We are all too aware of how quickly these pups can seem to be badly hurt and then bounce back. It is so difficult to tell whether they are enduring the bumps and bruises of life or if there is something more drastic going on. Our Murphy has had several episodes of back problems, and when he stepped on a thorn yesterday, all I could think was "Not again". He didn't want to put weight on his back foot, and I was sure he had done something to his back. Apparently whatever bit of thorn we couldn't find just worked itself loose and he was fine by this morning...trooping out to potty and going upstairs to watch TV with his Dad.

What is it with these Murphy dogs?

Kathi and Murphy

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

MURPHY DOGS LISTEN UP!!!!!! You guys must think it's funny to scare your humans with limps...NOT FUNNY!!!!

But a big sigh of relief from all of us that the Murphys are all better today!

Just a little "aside". My Merry Myrtle started limping on her front leg two days ago. My heart sank and I wanted to throw up. I felt up and down ner leg a dozen times...barely glanced at her law because I was too focused in the "horror" of what it good be! Finally studied her law and there was a VERY VISIBLE gash in her paw! I nave treated it at home and wrapped it (good luck with the wrap staying in place!) but clearly need to get her to vet probably for a couple of stitches...ugh! If the snow a d kce ever stops so I can drive!

But heah, seeing any kf our dogs or cats start limping scares the neck out of us!!

Donna I"m glad to hear he's doing better. Those kinds of accidents are so scary! Remember to let him rest up, the more he can stay quiet the better he will heal. Keep up the great work.

By the way, two years as a histiocytic sarcoma survivor is AMAZING! clapAs you know the prognosis is depressing, so Murphy is a rock star in this world! We would looooove it if you would share his story with us for Tripawd Tuesday. PM me for details so we can spread the word that there is hope with that particular cancer. Thanks!!! And give him a smooch from us.

Ice can be so dangerous and not always something you can get rid of or see until it is too late.  We went through something similar with Nixon 2 weeks ago but we didn't see when/how he hurt his wrist.  Two weeks of rest and NSAIDs and he's doing fine but even our vet was terrified of what kind of injury we were dealing with.  He's also almost 23 months post amp and a right front leg amputee.

Our deck can get very slick, even with carpet on it so we often put his harness on even to go in the backyard.  We have two dogs so we send Cookie out first and if she's having trouble with 4WD, we'll assist Nixon.  Sometimes he wants us right there with him, sometimes he ditches us.  Other times, he'll refuse to walk across the deck and demand to go out the front door which is often much drier and only 3 steps to get down vs a 19 foot ramp to reach the ground.  For really bad weather, my dogs are trained to use large 4 foot x 5 foot washable piddle pads in the kitchen.  Cookie rarely uses them but Nixon appreciates the option.

And Sally, glad it is "just" a cut and not anything worse.  Ice can cut up paws too.  Wonder if they make dog boots in Myrtle size??  And I'd want pictures of that.  :D
