Hi everyone!

I recently adopted (on Saturday!) an amazing little dog named Jaime, who is a pug/dachshund mix. (At least we think so. It doesn't really matter what he other than awesome.) It's only been a few days and I've realized he knows all kinds of commands and he only cried once when I left for work today, so I really feel like I hit the jackpot with my little guy.

Anyways, he hops around on three legs because his front, right leg isn't fully developed. So, he has most of it, just basically no paw. My biggest worry right now is that he is impossible to stop from jumping off of things and landing on his little leg, which over his 2 years of life has worn down a little bald spot on the underdeveloped leg. I'm talking to the vet about it on Saturday, and seeing if he might be a good candidate for a prosthesis, but have any of you come across something similar? It looks like it could hurt/bother him, so I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to ease what looks pretty painful while still letting him be a dog.

Thank you so much!

Emmy

Hi Emmy, welcome. Yay for adoping Jaime! You're pawesome! We can't wait to see what this pup looks like.

I hope you don't mind I moved your post here to this forum about dogs who are born without a limb or lost one for a reason other than cancer. It's a great place to follow along dogs like Jaime and their adventures.

He DOES sound like a great candidate for surgery. Here are videos with OrthoPets that explain why he is.

Meanwhile, what you can do for him to help keep that stump from getting banged up is to keep lots of soft beds and throw rugs around the house so he doesn't bang on it too much. I know it's hard, you can't keep him in bubble wrap, but whatever you can do will make a difference.

Let us know what your vet says. And keep in mind that if your vet isn't familiar with prosthetics , you can definitely find one who works with companies like OrthPets, they're all over the place.
