Coat Quality after surgery

Quixote is a wire-haired dog.  The vet shaved approximately a quarter of him for the surgery. I know this seems trivial but how do I help ensure he has proper coat over the amputation site?  I do handstrip him on a regular basis but shaving destroys wire coats.

You're just going to have to wait to re strip once he grows back in. One shaving shouldn't alter the coat texture too much. It's the constant long term shaving that affects their coats pretty negatively.

One of my terrier mixes had to be shaved for a procedure and I just waited for the hair to get to the point where it needed to be stripped again and it wasn't an issue.

Love to see another person keeping their terriers coat the way it was meant to be!

I have to ask what breed is that cutie in you avatar picture? Its one of my biggest pet peeves, people who shave their wire coated dog. The coat is wire for a reason.

My boys brother was shaved once and his coat is ruined. Its probably fixable and I will be attempting to fix that in the near future.  For my boy, this is the second time this area was shaved.  He did have the FHO done.  My husband says that if the coat is ruined we will call the are the petting patch or something, as the coat will be softer there then else where.

Champ (the dog in my avatar) is some sort of Schnauzer mix. I'm really not quite sure what he is. My boyfriend and I adopted him about 2 months ago. His coat had been clippered before I got him, but he really seems to have a softer coat that wouldn't really take well to stripping.

I also have 2 other terrier type mixed breeds. Rosie is actually a Beagle/Shih Tzu mix but she has a slightly wiry coat that I strip down only like 1-2 times per year(I like the shaggy look on her). I also have Walter who is some sort of Beagle/Terrier mix that has a harsh wiry coat. I've had him for slightly less than 1 year and I will be stripping him down later this month.

Here they all are together

The are all so cute.  I love Terriers lol .  I try to strip out my two wire coated dogs monthly but fall behind, I love Quixote when he is all stripped out. He looks like a different dog.

Handstripping is horrible. Quixote doesnt want to stay still for it.  Then he slips on the hair, and falls.  Then I get covered in his hair and have to strip.  and HE DOESNT EVEN LOOK DIFFERENT

Has he always been wiggly for the stripping or just recently?

My female is in heat and he thinks he can still do something about it.  He will stand for being hand stripped but he prefers his comb.  On a positive note he is approximately half stripped now.  I really need to set an alarm on my phone so I do it every 6 weeks or even once a week (roll his coat).  My female is completely done but she lost all her wire coat when she had pups 4 months ago so shes EASY right now, for her its about hardening her coat right now. With Quixote its about making him look loved and not scruffy lol.  The wire hair on his mane gets to be 3 or 4 inches long.

Oh boy someone thinks he's a ladies man haha.

I'm going to be stripping down my two 4-leggers in a couple weeks when it finally warms up here. I've never done my one boy Walter so I'm excited to see how nice all his coloring is going to come through.

My girl Rosie will be actually going to a local groomer cause her coat is a bit wonky and I'd rather pay someone to strip her down all the way and then just manage it from there. She's got such a downy undercoat where her white is and it drives me nuts! I stripped her down all the way last year and it about killed my hand/fingers. I'm thinking bout trying to maintain a rolled coat on her but then I also love it when she gets all scruffy looking too.

I at one point kept Quixotes coat in show quaility.. it was always stripped out and nice. He has never been a show dog, that opportunity was taken away from him when he was attacked and injured. He would have loved prancing in a show ring though as he really does think hes the hottest thing out there.

I just really prefer him with the shorter mane.  Right now I feel like I will never be done stripping him out I got so far behind with it. <img alt="" src="http://tripawds.....r-surgery/http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii312/shannalee_p/013d29b338644824f0ab22410481ffd104f6fae60e.jpgImage Enlarger

He's such a cutie, I love the freckles on his legs.

This is Rosie as a puppy, and the shortest she's ever been in her life.

This was her at her longest last year (she was 2 and I hadn't done any sort of real grooming on her at all)

And this was after I stripped her down. Looking at the photo now there was so much more I could have gotten off, but I was DONE by the end of it lol

I'm hoping the groomer can get her as close to the puppy pic as possible and I'm going to try keeping her a bit neater, but still a bit scruffy.

wow are you sure thats the same dog... lol. I thought Quixote looked like a new dog after stripping yours is amazing lol I would let her get the wired and then strip her right down every time just cause its so drastic lol.  I love it when theres that much change in them.

My wire haired female has NO change at all really shes JUST two years old and theres NO change in her when you strip her out. She takes HOURS to hand strip and theres NO difference in the appearance or feel  of her.

Yeah that's pretty much what I do. She gets stripped down in the spring and then grows out for the rest of the year.
