Can Gabapentin and Tramadol be given together? Is Tramadol really needed when giving Gabapentin?

Yes, Bo was on both. Tramadol was used for overall pain and the Gabapentin was for nerve pain. We stopped Gaba. about 2.5 weeks after surgery and Bo was on Tram. for the rest of his life. Hope that helps!

Jingle up your vet if you feel like you don't need the tramadol.  It's really kind of an "optional" drug.  So is gabapentin but if you feel Misty is doped, then you can lower doses and cut some out.  But I would ensure you ask your vet first.  It's good he/she knows and will guide you on how much to lower.

Lots of healing wishes to Misty!

My Jewels was on both gabapentin and tramadol for a few months before amputation and did fine.  The only side affects (most likely from the gabapentin per our oncologist) is that her appetite was low because the gabapentin is likely to upset her stomach.  After amputation we stopped gabapentin and gradually lowered her tramadol doses.  She is now on one tramadol pill twice a day, which is the dose she will probably be on from now on.  She is also on carprofen (50mg) twice a day.  We will probably eventually lower the carprofen to 25mg in the next week since she will be at that 4 week post amputation point where she can return to normal activity.  And yes, your Misty has a very sweet face!

Jewels was a gorgeous Lab-Shep mix that found us at the pet rescue when she was just 3 months old. Born June 2000; Diagnosed OSA on June 1, 2011; L-front Amputation September 12, 2011; Crossed Rainbow Bridge December 30, 2011. My "baby dog" will always be in my heart.  Now she is running fast and free on all four legs after the rabbits and squirrels!  Jewels was loved by her crazy-busy mom, even-keeled dad, pesky twin human brothers and monkeydog sister Aspen.  Read about Jewels' Tripawd Journey here.

Yes you can use both together.  I tend to use gabapentin for 7-14 days post-op and then wean off.  Most dogs can handle Tramadol fine and many take it long-term for arthritis so you can safely use it as long as necessary.  Some dogs seem to get a little loopy on it and it can also decrease appetite so the dose can be lowered if needed.
