So Jasper Lily (the dog that thinks she is a cat)... was on the kitchen counter again this a.m. I had peeled an egg and left the shells in the sink (not really well so probably part of the hard boiled egg was still there) and rushed off to a spin class. Came home - house was trashed. And the egg shells weren't in the sink. I don't *think* I ran the disposal but it was 445 a.m. so maybe I did.

Paper towels shredded, laundry everywhere, cutting board and knife on the floor....I don't love this "on the counter" thing but short of moving my couch to the center of the room where she can't simply step from the back of the counter to the counter ledge to the kitchen, not sure what else to do....

Well actually I do know and it appears day times will be crate city for her.

But are the egg shells safe? She was fine while I was home getting ready for work and have been in a meeting all morning. I called the vet and he said I should watch to see if she vomits. I can't rush home now but maybe I can leave in a couple hours. Sigh.

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

That's a question I've wondered about as well. I made deviled eggs last weekend and put the shells in the trash. Just for a moment, I wondered if I was making a mistake fearful that one of the girls might get curious.

On the whole "counter" thing, I had the same problem years ago with a cat. I don't know if this will work with JL, but I broke my kittie by laying long strips of cellophane tape ('round here we just call it Scotch tape) sticky side up on all my counters. In the middle of the night I heard this racket in the kitchen and found a big ball of tape under the table and strips missing on the counter. I continued this practice until the day came when no tape was disturbed on the counter. It only took three applications before I broke her of the bad habit and it didn't hurt her in any way. In fact, it kinda kept her busy for a bit trying to get the tape off her paws.

I guess it's the thought process. Just find something she hates and put it on your counter. Maybe you could get one of those plastic owls they use as scare crows and see what she does!

I know! I have a fake animated bear skin that my girls avoid like the plague. It has a motion detector on it and growls when something walks past it. It's quite hilarious. Maybe you could put something like that on your counter as a "guard"!

Then take pictures and post it here!

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.

LMAO!!! I am DYING here at the office! JL definitely thinks she is a cat which is ironic since she normally chases them... we just call it scotch tape too... 🙂 BTW - I lived w/a cat once. Loved to put tape on their feets ... hee hee... I am really a nice person. Promise!

I like the idea of getting something that will scare her that moves ... that would probably do the trick. I wish I could actually catch her doing it, film it and then discourage it.

So far all that I have found that she is truly fearful of is fireworks and balloons. But I'll keep looking. Let's hope she hasn't spent her day on the counter. Oy. She is pretty smart though... she seems to walk back off the ledge to the couch since there is no way she could jump down like a cat. Well she could but I don't think dogs do that kind of leaping down!

I think eggshells are harmless if they're bround up...a good source of calcium maybe? We shall see what the good Doc says.

I have never seen any dog obstruct or have any problem digesting egg shells so she should be fine.

I have had many big dogs but none have ever been counter surfers.  You can try stacking empty soda cans in a tower so if she goes up there they fall and scare her off or they used to make something for cats called a "Scat Mat" that gave a mild tingly shock (seems mean) if the animal stepped on the mat.  I think the best option  is a baby gate to keep her out or the crate.

Thanks ALL ... She is 100% fine ... in fact, so proud of herself ... brat! Good thing she's cute!

I might try trapping her in the bedroom (she likes it in there anyways) and see how that goes ... OR cans might work. That's a good idea. Anything to scare her.

I still want a video of her actually doing it but w/out her thinking that it's ok, I don't know how I would get that...

She is... definitely ... channeling her inner shelby!

Boy, I hope eggshells are okay because when I go in the chicken coop I give the dogs all the pigeon eggs and I keep the chicken eggs. What if you put balloons on the counter? Weims are absolutely famous counter surfers. Once Maggie (sweet Angel) jumped up and licked a cast iron pan so much that it fell on our tile floor and cracked it. It's actually a nice remembrance now. And once Hank took a piece of fish off a plate so flawlessly that my husband asked if I ate it. We have no techniques to keep them off just watch them when we are home and we don't leave them alone in the house. good luck.

LOL about Hank!!!! Jasper did that at a party ... I called it stealth like a ninja ... she just swooped in, slid a cracker and was on her way but I caught her.

I am sure if Shelby would have figured out how to get on the counter (the couch wasnt in the same place) she would have done the same.

No harm from the shells but we won't make a habit of it! And we'll work on counter manners ... She's NOT a cat! LOL

I'm late to the discussion but I actually bake eggshells to dry them out and then grind them into a powder and put it in the homemade food mix I make for the boys. I have a friend who feeds raw and he gives his dog the whole egg, shell and all.

Jake once ate 2lbs of raw hamburger from the counter when I stepped out to check the grill and the other day I woke up to Tanner throwing up pieces of corn cobs. Apparently, he's figured out how to open the trash can and get things out with no one noticing the trash was disturbed. We had left him out while we ran to the store quick. Crazy dogs!

I also give Johnnie egg-shell "meal"  ( baked and then ground ) - one teaspoon with each meal - under vet's recommendation, because he is eating home-cooked food and I have to complement his calcium.

Glad to know Jasper Lily is doing fine.

Our awesome Golden Boy was diagnosed for OSA in April 2014 in the proximal humerus, front-leg amp on 05/20/2014. Finished chemo (Carbo6) on 07/10/2014. Ongoing treatment: acupuncture + K-9 Immunity Plus ( 3chews) and home-cooked no-grain diet.   Stopped Apocaps because of liver issues.   Liver issues: controlling altered enzymes with SAM-e and Milk Thistle.  October 17:  started having seizures.  Taking fenobarbital for seizures.  April 18: started prednisone.

Trying to find out if my dog can have eggs on her cancer/chemo diet.  I know they are a good source of protein,  but want to make sure it's safe.

Don't put balloons on the counter - the dogs could choke on them.

I have a good story about the Scat Matt.  smiley  My son and I lived in a townhouse (so it had an upstairs) and we rescued a kitten that was born out in the field next to our apartment.  I don't ever let my cats out, they are indoor only, they get fixed and front-paw declawed (yah, yah) and they stay in the house.  But Midnight's mom still lived outside and so did his sister from the next litter after him.  So sometimes he would escape out of the apartment, and he was quick!  So my best friend's husband worked for Invisible Fence and she got a Scat Mat for me.  I put it right at the front door and Midnight hated it.  But it's not very big, maybe 3'X2' and he could just jump right over it, so we had to be careful whenever we opened the door.  Midnight got so good that if you didn't see him it was the worst.  He could be upstairs and if you opened the door to let someone in, he could run downstairs & be through the door before you even realized he had come down!  lol

I'm not a vet but... cooked eggs would be fine for most dogs but as always check with your vet to be sure. Eggshells need to be ground up with a coffee grinder.
