Hi,

My rotti had her rear leg amputated  a year ago due to cancer. To be honest we are lucky to still have her as the vet said to get 6 months would be lucky. She's 12 this year and mentally is still very fit. Over the last month or so she has stopped walking unaided. She can stand and hold her weight up, but unfortunately can't walk on her own anymore. We have an amazing harness yo help support her but I really think she'd benefit from a wheelchair to help keep her active and her mind stimulated by being able too out for little walks. Because we have to support her and bare most if the weight walking we can only take her out to too Let and physically can't take her out for long as it's crippling us! Unfortunateky the issue with getting a large wheelchair is the cost. We would need a large wheelchair and this would for around £400. I've looked on EBay but can't find them much cheaper second hand. Can anyone advise where I may be able to get one cheaper second hand?

Hello and welcome Holly and Family! Thanks for posting here and telling us more about your girl. She is a rock star cancer survivor for sure! superstar I'm sorry to hear about her mobility difficulties.

We moved your post here just in case someone in our Angel Exchange has a chair. BUT, before you get one, we highly recommend first consulting with a canine physio therapist. In this article about wheelchairs and Tripawds, you'll see why it's so important to avoid self-prescribing a chair.

We cannot over-emphasize the importance of professional intervention before putting a Tripawd in a cart. To summarize, before spending a huge (or hopefully small!) amount of money, you want to make sure:

1) that she doesn't have any underlying issues that are causing the pain

2) that the chair she gets is an appropriate fit for her needs. Only a physio can tell you if the wheels are adjusted properly, as well as the frame, so that you don't end up causing more damage and pain than without.

Hope this helps! Please feel free to start a new topic in "Hopping Around" or "Size and Age Matters" so that we can better follow along with her story.

Thanks for your response. Any help or advice is much appreciated. Holly really is a trooper. Unfortunately when she was 6 months old she ruptured her ligaments in her other back leg. She had several operations and has been going to hydrotherapy ever since due to arthritis. When we found out she had cancer in her other back leg when she was 11 it was a really difficult decision to go ahead with the amputation. We really weren't sure how she'd cope on the remaining leg because it was her weaker one and she'd never really had to use it much with the other one being  so strong. We were amazed how well she coped and until about a month ago she was happily hopping around. She has seen a physio quite a few times and both her and Holly's hydrotherapist thinksnshe would benefit from a wheelchair . She is a very young 12 year old and still is full of life. She loves to play and I know she could get so much more from life if she had that extra support to get out and about.

Nothing  lights up our world more than when one of our tripawd dogs  blows "statistics" out of the water!!   CONGRATULATIONS!!

You may have already thought of this, but maybe a doggy stroller will suffice for awhile until you can get a wheelchair .  It would get her outside in nature where she could enjohmall the sights and smells.  You could help her out long enough to potty, maybe lay on a blanket with her for a bit, then have her get back in her "royal carriage" while you chauffeur jer back home😎

Let us know how it goes, and congratulations  again!

Hugs

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
