Advances in Comparative Oncology Research
Guests: Drs. Avenelle Turner and Kristy Richards
Date: Sunday, November 2, 2014
Time: 6:00pm EST (3:00 Pacific)
Duration: 30 min.
Call In Number: (646) 716-5450*
Tune In Here: http://www.blog.....y-research
This fascinating discussion will be led by veterinary onocologist Dr. Avenelle Turner, DVM Diplomate ACVIM (Oncology) from the Veterinary Cancer Center in Southern California (http://vetcance.....ctors.html) and Dr. Kristy Richards, MD, PhD at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Department of Genetics (http://www.med......0MD,%20PhD).
Drs. Turner and Richards will discuss how cancer in animals mimics the same disease in people and you'll learn how cancer similarities between humans and dogs are identified and lead to new treatments for both species. For example, over 30 years ago bone marrow transplants were first developed for dogs, then subsequently done in people with lymphoma.
As comparative oncology research awareness grows and more study collaborations occur between academic researchers and pharmaceutical companies, more treatments will be found for pets and people alike.

This will be fascinating!!! Thank you,yet again, for bringing such valuable information to us.
Won't be able to listen....will jave to wait til you post the "re-play" click-on for tablets loke you were kind enought to do last time.
Would like to submit a question though.....
* Are results tracked outside of study groups? If so, how?
* Would "they" ever consider using Tripawds Forums as an accurate real life resource when measuring "medical progress", or lack thereof?

We'll be listening! But ahem...just want to point out its PET cancer awareness month
Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. "Like" Jill's facebook page: https://www.fac.....tty?ref=hl Proud member of the WINTER WARRIORS!!!! Her blog can be read at http://jillsjou.....ipawds.com. xoxo
Dr. Turner was Shelby's oncologist !!! The most amazing, compassionate, smart doctor - ever! I wish she could be Jasper's PCP but we do love our other vet! I do hope we'll never have to have Jasper meet Dr. Turner but if we do, we know where to go!
Pet cancer awareness month? I had no idea! Let's raise the roof!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
Eeek! PET Cancer Awareness it is. Thank you E & J!
Talk to you later, thanks for listening to the show.
