Redneck story - short version
Late in the visit an older guy (Texas Redneck) enters the park with two pitbulls (or pitbull type, you know many breeds get lopped into this category) off leash. Both rushed to where we were to see what was going on. All was well, the young female was showing submission to Duke, (Duke was on short leash with prong collar the entire time) then the male gets into the mix and growled. Duke growled back. Bob yelled for the guy to get his dogs. Redneck mouths off about Duke not being controlled, Bob's short temper snaps and they snarl at one another until the guy finally continues on his way. He took his dogs toward the back of the park but they kept running up to the front and he was nowhere close to them. I decided it was time for us to leave before they decided to come back. Not wanting an issue to develop that could be avoided.
So now my educational spill for all those who do not know. It is never recommended a pitbull be taken to a dog park, not because they are a menace to other dogs, but because with the bad press the breed gets, a responsible owner doesn't want to put themselves or their dog in a situation that can turn south and cause more bad publicity. They are a wonderful breed, are very people loving, and can co-exist with other dogs, but they must be monitored 100% of the time.
Although Duke did well, and we will continue to introduce him to people and other dogs, I sincerly doubt we would go into an open dog park with him again. For me it isn't worth the risk.

That is one of the reasons I have avoided at least one dog park....There were a LOT of unsocialized pits the last time we were there...
Shanna you are SO responsible and careful and truly an example for others....I am so glad Duke had a positive experience. The redneck jerk sounds like the jerk who had the CHICHUAHUA that bit me...I have interacted with 180 pound WOLVES and had them licking me all over (tasting me probably) and the damn little dog took me down.
It is not the dogs fault as we have all heard so many times, but the owners who contribute to the bad rap...unfortunately, it is the dogs that pay the price.
I am so glad you guys had a great time....I am envious!!!!! But it was way to far for us to drive...
There are no bad dogs, just bad humans....
But yes, we had a BLAST and are so honored that you all came out.
Diane, thank you so much, we're so glad we finally got to meet you in person after all this time. The bond that we share over the passing of our special angel Tripawds, on practically the same day, will never be forgotten, but it was so beautiful to watch our two canine puppy heroes enjoy the day together.
And Shanna, seeing you, Bob and Trouble together was something we had sincerely hoped would happen again. Trouble is an amazing, incredible girl and we are THRILLED she has beaten the odds. And Duke, well, we share a lot in common when it comes to raising challenged dogs don't we?! He's a great dog, with pawrents like you he will find is way.
We sincerely hope that angry irresponsible dude finds some love in his life that can help him overcome his issues. Dog knows the world needs more love and less hostility!
Lotsa hugs coming at all of you, thank you for coming to the park yesterday! We'll see you again when we return, promise!

Thanks for sharing your story. Unfortunately it's a situation that has repeated itself many times with Fortis and I. More love and less hostility, yes indeed! In any case it sounds like you guys had a super time and that's fantastic. Sorry to have missed y'all.
Will anyone be posting pictures of the Texas Pawty? We sure would love to see some.
We'll get around to posting our photos ASAP! But we didn't snap a pick of the grumpy redneck. 😉

I tried to post one and had a problem. I never got back to it to give it a second try.

What a great looking bunch (including the humans)!
Shanna – you have to put that smiling face of Trouble as your avatar! She just looks so happy!
I swear that Wyatt is one of most handome german sheps I think I've ever seen! Personally, I'm glad he has a nutty personality!
Who is the border collie dog?
Too bad about the sterotypical redneck incident. I've always been a little nervous about pitties but not because of the dog, because I don't trust the owners. This freakin' tough guy BS in owning a pittie makes me angry. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't rappers help intensify the image of pitties being tough?
Lest we forget that pittbulls were the number #1 family dog in American at the turn of the 20th century much like labs and goldens are today.

She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Diane's previous dog Abbey was taken by cancer the day before Jerry left us in October, 2008. It was a pleasure to finally meet Diane in person as she has been a log time supporter of Tripawds.
Awww - how nice. I'm sure that made the pawty extra special.

Comet, great job researching pitties. They were actually called 'nanny' dogs at the height of their popularity. They have been owned by the famous over the years, Hellen Keller had one, Petey on the Little Rascals was one, The RCA dog is one, and for a current celeb - Rachel Rae.
They are not human agressive as folks have come to believe. If one is HA, it probably has an irresponsible owner. They can be dog agressive, and a responsible owner knows this and is watchful of anything that may trigger this response, thus the reason Duke stayed on leash - it is too soon in his socializing to predict how he will react to all dogs.
And you may be right about the avatar. Maybe I do need a smiling pittie.
