Hello all, it’s been a few months since I was last on here in October. I apologize for not giving more frequent updates, but it’s been crazy hectic here.
I started to write an update on our greyhound, Summer, last night, but lost it somehow, so I’ll try to rehash what I wrote:
As some of you know, Summer was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right front leg at the end of August 2023. She had amputation surgery on September 11. The first 10 days were very hard, not gonna lie, but after that she healed rather quickly and without too much trauma, other than me being paranoid every time she sneezed, moved, or whimpered. Summer began chemo (Carboplatin) on October 3, and had her 4th and final dose the day after Christmas. Her CXR’s have been clear so far. Yay, Summer! Other than a moderately decreased appetite for a few days after her treatments, she did very well with chemo. No apparent nausea, no vomiting. The only other SE she experienced was a slightly lowered WBC after each treatment, which can happen, especially with greyhounds. The oncologist decreased her dose slightly after the initial dose for that reason, and we also spread the third and fourth doses out to every 4 weeks, rather than every 3. That solved the problem. They loved her at the oncologist’s office - said she would simply lie down on her bed and usually slept right through the infusion. Summer is an amazing greyhound, so easy to love, and she gives the very best hugs. She’s always been a great ambassador for her breed; and now, though not by choice, she’s a wonderful ambassador for a greyhound cancer survivor. As of today, she’s a happy, energetic girl, getting around quite well as a tripod (still does her daily wheelies through the house), eating like a champ, and still giving those great hugs. If I could figure out how to post a photo, I would, but unfortunately, I haven’t yet mastered that puzzle. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that we will have some quality time with our girl. We’re now almost 5 months out since diagnosis, and today is exactly 4 months since her surgery. She goes back for a recheck of bloodwork and chest x-rays in mid-February.
It’s been a tough year. If you remember, we lost our beloved tuxedo cat Puck to an oral cancer in early October, the day before Summer began her treatments. That was very hard as he was greatly loved by us for 16 years. Then, as if we hadn’t had enough, our sweet Pug, Sophie (12), was diagnosed with a melanoma cancer on the inside of her cheek in mid-October. She had surgery the following week to remove the melanoma, then began immunotherapy treatments with the Oncept vaccine immunotherapy injections in November. She was given a series of 4 vaccines, spaced two weeks apart, and had her last one on January 4. So we had two dogs undergoing cancer treatments at the same time, but on different days of the week. I had to keep a very strict schedule to remember where we were supposed to be when. Sophie is still acting mostly like her old self, with the exception of appearing a tad more tired, so you wouldn’t know she was sick to look at her. Unfortunately, we found an enlarged lymph node under her chin just prior to her last Oncept treatment last week, and further testing showed it to be cancerous due to the spread of her melanoma. Yes, I cried. I don’t know how long we’ll have with either of our beautiful girls, but you can bet it will be full of love, lots of treats, and many, many hugs.
I also don’t know what this new year will bring, but I was sure happy to see 2023 go. I hope you are all doing well. I will keep you updated on Summer’s progress, and probably Sophie’s as well. Cancer sucks.
Robin & Summer
Robin it is so good to hear from you, thank you for stopping by to let us know how Summer and Sophie are doing.
You have had your hands full, I'm so sorry! One cancer diagnosis is hard enough, but two? Oh my gosh, that is rough!
After all you've been through, your resilient attitude shines through like a superstar. Your girls have taught you the meaning of how to Be More Dog , and it's clear you are making the most of every day together. Nobody knows what the future brings, and as much as cancer does suck, it really drives home that it's so important to follow our dog's lead about making the most of every day. You are doing exactly that.
I hope Sophie has many more good days ahead, and of course Summer too. If you'd like help adding images to the Forums please message me or @benny55 and one of us will help you OK? We would enjoy seeing both pups and celebrating all their victories!
Oh gosh, talk about s roller coaster rode these past many months.WOW! So much good foing on woth Summer. So much to celebrate.
Then to have Puck transition in October, Sophie getting her diagnosis....unbelievablely hard to process and deal with. I'm so sorry all this has been piling up on you.
It does sound like Sophie is stable and happy and still able to be Sophie. We hope that continues for a long time. Goodness knows you are doing everything possible for her.....more than many can or are willing to do.

You darn right! And that's all Summer and Sophie care about! As you know, days on the calendar dont mean squat to them, but being loved by you, being spoiled, getting treats....that's living a life of bliss as far as they are concerned. You already know how to be fully present and live in the moment just like Summer, and Sophie too. Nope, not always easy, but the best way to not let that piece of crap disease interfere with the joy of living in the now.....and the "now" is a happy place to be with Summer and Sophie.
I'm going to PM you my email and I would be honored to post some pictures , video of your beautiful Summer and Sophie. We love pictures around here....especially of Greyhounds 😉
Hugs

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
What a tough fall for you and your pets. I'm glad to hear Summer and Sophie are doing well for now, though!
Were you the person I had PM'd info about a home cooked diet? I know it was someone with a Greyhound. I cleared all my PMs a while back and that was one I wanted to follow up on. If it was you, I'd love to hear if you tried it and how it worked out.

Yep, that’s me. I have made some of the home cooked diet that you reommended. Summer loves it! It helped her regain most of her weight too. Thank you so much for all the suggestions!

Thanks, Jerry! It wasn’t always easy learning how to Be More Dog , but it sure is empowering. We now make the most not only of every day, but of every moment we get to spend together. I’ve learned so much from my fur kids, especially how to live in the moment. The great thing is that neither Summer nor Sophie know that they’re sick; they just know that they’re well loved.
I have to thank you again for this site. It has been beyond helpful in getting me through this, and I’m not sure I would have been able to do so if it weren’t for all the great info on here. The support from all of you has been phenomenal!
I’m going to ask @Benny55 if she’ll assist me in posting a video to show just how well Summer is getting along. She’s a rockstar. Also one of her waiting for Santa, and one that shows how she wakes us up each morning - just excited to be here and eager get on with her day.
