I took Max to the vet this morning. They did blood work, x-rays, etc., and gave him a full exam. At this point, they think his shortness of breath is being caused by fluid around the lungs, which is causing pressure within the chest cavity. I didn't see the x-rays myself (I didn't want to), but the doctor said the lesions in his lungs are much larger. He's not in pain, but he's uncomfortable and not breathing easily.
The doctor at the office today isn't our normal vet, but she's going to call her and do a consultation. We'll trust their judgment. The long and short of it is this - they think they can drain the fluid using ultrasound (I have no idea how that works), which will alleviate the pressure. The problem is that they also think the fluid is likely to return within a few days. This isn't something that's going to go away, and so the ultrasound may end up being little more than trying to hold the ocean back with a broom.
So we're waiting to see what our two doctors come up with. Di and I agreed a long time ago that we won't have Max in pain even for a second longer than he has to be. We're not giving up yet, but the vet isn't liking what she sees. I'll keep this thread updated as best I can as new developments occur.
Oh, Max Buddy, hang in there. We're hoping they find good solutions for you--this sounds really scary. Prayers are coming your way.

I am so sorry to hear this news. I really didn't think Max would encounter these sorts of problems yet. I'll be thinking of all of you today and the next few days. Thanks for keeping us posted. I am glad your fleet of highly skilled vets is at your side and working on Max's case.
I'm sorry to hear Max isn't doing well. Hopefully, this is a minor setback and Max will catch a new wind and sail. Good thoughts for the pawrendts and healing thoughts for Max.

Lots of love coming your way guys, we hope something can help for the long term. You have an awesome group of docs there working on your health. And all of us here send our pawsitive energy too. With all that, certainly something's got to help, right?!
We were also presented with that ultrasound solution when mets were bothering me real bad, but we didn't go that route because other issues came up. I'm glad to hear you aren't in pain.
You rock, Max, we love you.

I don't think that removing fluid via ultasound is really all that big of a procedure. Basically, an ultrasound machine is a non-invasive way to make sure they are putting the needle in the exact right spot. Put the needle in (attached to a tube) and drain fluid.
That said, I understand your worry about how long it will last, etc. and what is the best for Max.
I would be tempted to try it once and see. It may surprise you and last longer. It may not. Only Max will know...really. At the beginning of last week they told us Caira would only live a couple more days. Today she was rolling around out in the sunshine with her Poppa. You just never know.
Either way, I"m thinking of you and thinking of Max. Sending much strength to the Mutt of Orange County!
