My quad pug Tani was on gaba for her arthritis.  I was told that if I was to take her off of it I had to taper because it could cause seizures to stop cold.  Gaba is also used to control seizures, and those types of meds tend to cause seizures if stopped abruptly.  I never took her off of it so I don't have a taper schedule.

I'm sure it depends on how long you take if you need to taper.  I do know that the dose for pain control is usually way lower than the dose for seizure control.  Unfortunately I could never find exact info on how to taper and from what dose and time frame it was required.

I always taper off pain meds with my dogs, that way I can judge if they are still having any pain and if so I can keep giving without the meds getting completely out of their system.

I would follow your vet's instructions, but I would want an affirmative statement from them saying the dose and time does not warrant tapering and that Tipper will not have a chance of seizure.

Yay Tipper! Chatted with your mom last night! Nitro had a somewhat difficult recovery, so I'm pretty sure he was on pain meds for a longer time - kinda hard to remember last summer. I think weaning off sounds like a good thing, and we still have tramadol on hand for the occasional soreness. Hopefully the harness becomes comfortable for him, it really can be a lifesaver. I put Nitro's on him a couple weeks before surgery, so he was pretty used to it when we needed it. It got so when he saw me get it out, he'd get super excited cuz he knew he was going for a ride (this was when he didn't need to wear it all day, and only used it when we went bye - bye).

Keep up the good work, Tipper! You sure are a handsome boy!
