Now that the decision has been made for Blaze I have scheduled surgery for 12-23-14. The surgeon had a very packed schedule and I didn't want Blaze squeezed in as an after thought. I will have the days surrounding both holidays off, that's nearly two weeks home with him. Now to get ready.
So far I have purchased the following - a gel cooling mat, a large firm theraputic dog bed, inflatable collar, webmaster harness . I moved his super large soft dog bed down stairs too. I already had a ramp and stairs for the station wagon. Sticky spray for his paw pads. We raised his food bowls using terracotta flower pots. I have baby gates to block access to the staircase and restrict access to one room. I contacted Debbie Gross about rehab in the future and have a thera ball. I plan to schedule some water treadmill sessions with her when we have the green light. And I will take an online tripaw rehab class with Deb through the Denise Fenzi Academy.
What am I overlooking? What else should I think about?
Mary
Sounds like a good plan and that you have your bases covered. My thoughts are:
Is he used to using a ramp/stairs?
Have your vet provide you with emergency contact numbers just in case you need some questions answered asap over the holiday. Get a second back up number just in case. We've dealt with recovery over the holidays and it can be frustrating when you can't reach anyone.
What is the flooring surface in your house like? The more traction the better.
Glad you'll be participating in the Tripawds Conditioning Course! See you there. We'll have more posts promoting it in the coming weeks.

Jerry Blaze is a retired agility dog so using a ramp shouldn't be a problem. I think between the ramp and his harness it will be ok.
The surgery will be at a 24/7 emergency vet hospital. There is always staff available.
My floors are wood and tile. I do have room size area rugs. Blaze is not using his leg at all. He just drags his knuckles. He is essentially using just 3 now.

Hmmmm, what's missing? Wine and chocolate for you?
Your preparation is amazing. I had less than a day to prepare for my cat's surgery. Things that I would have liked to known about in advance: type of medication she'll be on (dosage, timing), the best type of food, and that she may act crazy from the pain medication or when she was in pain (meaning it was time for more meds).
All the best on surgery day.

Mary it sounds like you are all good to go! Brady is going to do just fine!

Mary - May I ask where you got sticky spray for Blaze's paws? We have a lot of hard wood and tile floors at our house but I don't think Maggie is going to tolerate boots right after she comes home from the hospital. Thanks!

I'm not Mary but thought you might find this handy:

Best wishes to you, Blaze and your family. Surgery day may feel like the longest day of your life. Know that there are lots of folks sending prayers your way - we've suffered through it. When you see him post-op for the first time, you may be shocked, but keep in mind that those wounds will heal and he'll be back to his old self in no time. As has been said many, many times in these forums, this change is much harder on the bipeds than the quad/tri peds!

Kim I did not see your reply and question. This is the product I bought.

Showfoot spray is also available in the Gear blog along with various other recommended traction solutions.
