My Rahley had a rough 7-10 days as well,  but slowly everyday he showed improvement.   Now at almost 3 months since amputation.

We had a housesitter right before surgery, and she said Rahley was so quiet and withdrawn.  Had same housesitter 10 weeks after surgery, and she couldnt believe the difference!!  Hopping around like a puppy, dropping his babies in her lap to get her to play!! She said the difference was remarkable!!!

It takes some time,  but everyday gets a bit better for them

Oh, Terri, it’s so helpful to hear how  well your Rahley recuperated! It really gives me hope that Summer will get there in time. We are at 2.5 weeks postop now. Her stitches came out Tuesday and her incision is healing well. Surgeon seems to think she’s doing good. Getting her to eat is a project in itself - she’s very strong minded and it’s difficult to get her to do something she doesn’t want to do. I’m learning a whole lot of patience and letting her take the lead in how she feels.

These posts are so helpful. Even reading back over my own posts from the past 2 weeks helps. I can see how hopeless I felt on some days, but then overall I can see the progress being made. Baby steps on some days, and that’s okay. I am no longer questioning our decision to have the surgery done. Whatever happens, she deserves that chance. Learning to take one day at a time and live in the moments. Every one of those moments is precious.

The dog I mentioned yesterday who had the issue with getting backed up is also somewhat of a picky eater.  I don't think that particular event was the catalyst, but I eventually started cooking for her.  I spent months keeping notes on what I fed her and how much she ate.  Meal refusal was very common, as was only eating a few bites.  Eventually I made the decision to start cooking for her.  She eats her whole meal reliably.  Some vets are extremely against a home cooked diet for pets.  Luckily my vet is supportive.  She gets supplements to account for the vitamins and minerals that get added to commercial diets for pets.  If this is something you would want to try with Summer, I'm happy to share my advice and experiences cooking for Tempest.

Mischief, that would be great; I’d love to hear your recommendations on home feeding. Thank you!

Summer has started to eat better again since yesterday. I guess she was having a couple of off days on Wednesday and Thursday. She’s really doing well the past day or so. She’s asking to go for short walks, eating (as per her usual pokey self), sleeping well. Generally getting around better. Her demeanor is much more relaxed. I did put her t-shirt back on because she started licking on one tiny spot at the very end of her incision; it started looking a tad pink, so the shirt prevents her from doing that.

Tuesday is her first day of chemo. I’m hoping she does okay with it.

This site has been very helpful.

I will send you a PM with Tempest's diet when I next sit down at a real computer. That's more typing than I want to do on mobile!
