Sleepy after chemo?

Jackson had his first chemo on Thurs Jan 10, so today is the 5th day after.  According to his onco., days 3-5 are prime side-effect days.  Fortunately, he's eating and no other signs of tummy upset!  But, he's darn lazy.  It could be because we've put a slew of comfy dog beds and throws for him to relax in all through the house.  Or, is he sleepy from chemo?  He had carboplatin.  How did your furry family members react the week after chemo?  Or, uh, Jackson did just have major surgery a little more than 2 weeks and he's still adjusting to being a tripawd?!  Should we be worried he's sleepy or depressed?????

Thanks, folks!

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!

Sassy always sleeps more after her chemo appointments.  Some of Jacksons could be still adjusting to being a Tripawd.  Sassy started chemo closer to her one month ampuversary because we weren't sure what kind of cancer we were dealing with or even if it was a cancer for sure.    1st chemo went well no tummy upset.  2nd chemo she did get sick.  So we are going to see how chemo 3 will do in another week :)

Trouble was a bit less active for the first day, but back to her normal self after that.  She was however, always sort of a couch potato. She rested a lot even before her surgery.

If it has been only two weeks, he could indeed still be adjusting to the new normal. If you are concerned, do not hesitate to call your vet (or oncologist) and ask.  They will be happy to help you determine whether or not the behavior is normal.

Shan just finished 5 rounds of carbo and I saw the same thing you mentioned each time.  She had very few symptoms after each of the chemo treatments (eating/drinking/elimination all normal), but she always seemed a little lethargic for the first week after each treatment - maybe even a little depressed for a day or two.  Every time though, by the second week after treatment she returned to her same rowdy self.   The one symptom Shan had after surgery and during chemo that really got me worried was some repeated bouts of super fast breathing/panting.  It has gradually tapered off and happens only rarely now.  Vets couldn't ever give me a definitive dx, but best I can guess I think she really was wearing herself out with her rowdy lifestyle on 3 legs that weren't quite ready to take on the task. So I wouldn't doubt that some of Jackson's "laziness" is just his body telling him to take it easier until he's adjusted.  I don't think you should be too worried.  When he is more fully recovered from the amp, you may be able to "jolly him up" after the chemo sessions with toys and games he likes - that seemed to work for Shan after she had fully healed from the surgery.  Best of luck to you and Jackson!

Abby didn't really get hit by the tiredness thing until after her 5th treatment, and then she was pretty wiped out. The effects tend to be cumulative, which I didn't know going in. When she suddenly was so exhausted, I thought her cancer was back full-bore. So, be aware that the side effects can get more intense as the treatments go on.

Hope he's doing well!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman.
