Secondary bone cancer or hip strain?

I'm a 9 year old rottie and it has been 7 months since I lost my back left leg to osteosarcoma. I have been doing really well and enjoying my extra time immensely.  But, unfortunately my chest xrays have now shown some cancer in the lungs so I started metronomic chemo 2 weeks ago.  Everyone comments on how bright and healthy I look (how deceiving cancer can be!).  In the last few weeks I have been struggling with pain in my back leg/hip.  The vets think it is strain on my hip from walking on 3 legs and have given me Tramadol and strict rest for 1 week to see if it settles down.  Is this fairly normal for tripawds or could it be secondary bone cancer?

Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Magnum's motto - "Dream as if you'll live for ever, live as if you'll die today" (James Dean). Loyal, loving, courageous and spirited to the end. Welcome, your future forum posts will not require moderation.

Please keep in mind we are not vets, but based on what we've heard here, it is very rare for osteosarcoma to rear it's ugly head again in another bone. Some members have reported it spreading to the spine which is not pretty. Hopefully this is just a strain or overexertion. Keep Princess confined for the week, see how it goes, and please keep us posted.

PS: It has been a year since this community lost Nikki The Rott, but you may find her story helpful.

Hi Princess!

I'm so glad you've been beating the odds, and hope that you continue to do so for a long long time.

Many of us worry about the cancer spreading to other areas of the body besides the lungs, but like admin said, that is very rare. Start by asking yourself, have you done anything to over-exert or put stress on your back or hips? Jumping out of cars, off furniture, that sort of thing? They can add up and keep us from feeling 100 percent. The best thing you can do right now is wait it out. But if anything seems out of the ordinary, like your appetite disappears or something, call your vet OK?

I hope that some serious R&R helps. Please keep us posted and let us know how you're doing OK? We're so glad you found us.

Sending pawsitive thoughts that it is just a sprain and that some rest will make her feel like her old self again.

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Thank you for your warm wishes and advice/support.

The vets seem hopeful that I have just strained something. They can't be sure without doing xrays.  They have still advised me to keep taking Tramadol for the next week. That makes me feel a bit dopey.

My xrays 2 weeks ago showed 3 lung mets so I started metronomic chemo (with Palladia). In 2 weeks time I will have more xrays to see how things are going.

Even though I continue to be bright and healthy looking I have slowed up over the last month.  Is it the muscle strain or is it more?  It's so hard to know.

The Tramadol has been keeping me comfortable. No more whining in the night from pain.  But unfortunately rest does not seem to have helped.  The oncologist is now suggesting that it could be metastatic lesions on the lower spine.  She is reluctant to put me under a general anaesthetic and says that even if xrays confirm it is metastatic lesions it wouldn't change the treatment protocol.  I've now been switched from Tramadol (which makes me feel very dopey) to a half tablet of paracetamol/codeine for the pain (as well as Piroxicam and Amantadine).

In general I'm still very happy and alert but I am not keen to walk too far unless I'm on the scent of something really interesting. And if I do try to do too much I usually pay for it later that night and the next day.

My pawparent is worried about fractures. Does anyone have any experience with metastatic disease in the spine or other bones?

I don't have any experience with the lesions, but I just wanted to add that I'm sending positive thoughts your way.  Hang in there!

Sending good thoughts your way also!

Our resident vet friend here has experience personally and professionally with spinal mets.  You may want to post the question in "Ask a vet" topic category.  I personally don't remember anyone worried about fractures in the spine, because they usually succumb to the pain first.

Princess, I'm so sad to hear this news. I know you will make the most of every day.

Comet is right, most dogs usually succumb to the pain before an actual fracture, if they have spinal mets. While they are rare, they do occur, as this blog post written by a Tripawds member describes:

Primary Chondrosarcoma of the Spine, Jake's Story

It sounds like your vet has a good handle on pain management , but as Comet suggested you may want to find out Dr. Pam's thoughts in our Ask a Vet Forum topic.

Hugs to you and your family. We are thinking of you.

Mum decided not to go ahead with xrays because they wouldn't necessarily show anything anyway.  But good news. The pain in my lower spine / back leg is under control and I am much more mobile (although still not as much as I was  a couple of months ago).

The other good news is that after 1 month on metronomic Palladia two of my lung mets haven't grown at all and the third one has only grown a little bit. The oncologist was very pleased and mum is beside herself with relief.

Also, thank you Jerry for the link to Nikki The Rot.   The journeys of other Tripawds are both inspiring and heartbreaking.  We are late in getting active on this wonderful website because mum would break down too much as she read the stories of others.

I'm so glad you're feeling better Princess! That is definitely good news. Boy that Palladia is really working well for lots of pups!

We know it can be difficult to read the stories of other Tripawds with cancer, but we hope your mum will find inspiration in reading about their zest for life while living with this disease.
