My 2 1/2 year old Bailey was diagnoised in August for osteosarcoma. She has then had her leg removed and has gone through 5 almost 6 treatments of chemo. At this point the vet is telling me we will go to monthly check ups to see if the cancer has spread. I have heard from hollistic stores and doctors that a lot of people choose the raw diet instead of feeding dog food. She mentioned that most dogs that have been on that diet with cancer have lived longer than others not on the raw meals. I wanted to see what anyone else thought. If you have done the raw diet what companies do you use? Have your dogs eaten well on this diet? Did it seem to make any difference? Any feedback would be greatly appreicated! I just want to give her the best chances possible and if changing her diet will help then I am all for it. Also if any of you do supplements or detox kits etc please let me know if any of that has been good for your pups going through chemo. I just want to do everything I can.

I would wait until chemo is done before pursuing a raw diet, since the normal bacteria in the food could pose a problem for immunosuppressed individuals.  Once chemo is done any high protein/low carb diet would be good to help fight the cancer.  I'm sure that Jerry can give you lots of info on cooking/balancing a raw diet.  You could also consider Evo or other all-natural kibbled diets.  You are looking for a protein level of over 40% in addition to minimal carbs (this "starves" the cancer).

Once my dog Tazzie finished traditional chemo we started metronomic chemo but had to stop after 6 weeks due to side effects.  We also did artemisinin as well as Power Mushrooms and these things may have contributed to her 14 month survival.  All I know is that those mushrooms made her feel great!

My vet also warned me against making any changes until after the chemo was complete.  He didn't want to guess whether the chemo was causing a problem or another change I had made.

I tried Trouble on raw for her allergies a few years ago, and she loved it.  You have to be careful about balancing it, I overloaded her on ground beef and she had one of the worst allergic reactions ever.  Do your research and introduce new foods one at a time. I belong to a pit bull forum and several of the members feed raw and are well pleased with the results.

I have not personally had a vet that supported the use of raw, but I'm sure there are some out there.

Raw makes sense to me…what did dogs eat before they cozied up to humans who bought food from factories, or used fire to cook things? I feed Timber raw organic lamb, eggs, veggies, fruit, and raw chicken and veg patties from http://www.stel.....chewys.com

Google the Budwig diet for dogs and cats…they recommend carrots, tomatoes, romaine lettuce, cabbage, beets, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. mixed with raw egg, raw chicken, raw fish or other raw meats…they also recommend mixing 1 tablespoon flax seed oil with 2 tablespoons low-fat cottage cheese, blending really well and feeding that 2 times a day, which helps provide essential fatty acids that they can't produce on their own…best of luck with these changes…Denise and Timber

When I read Dr. Dressler's book, he discusses diet…he states that kibble has carcinogens in it due to heat/processing…so that is something that I would try to get away from if you feed kibble. I have always fed my dogs raw using premixes such as Sojourner Farms and Honest Kitchen, adding raw meat to these. I have since switched my cancer dog over to low carb premixes only. I use Urban Wolf premix with raw meat/liver/egg/oil added. It is at 5% carbs. I also use their Cancer Diet premix that is 1.5% carbs.

I also use K9 Immunity mushrooms, Transfer Factors, high doses of Omega fish oil, Teavigo, Berte's Immune Blend, Maritime Pine Bark and Maggie is also on homeopathy right now with Dr. Charles Loops to keep the cancer from spreading.
