Radar's pulled tendon progress

Day 14 post left front amp.  Radar's stitches were removed last Wednesday and the incision looks great.  We are keeping him in a t-shirt as he wants to lick at it (I'm sure it itches some).

The pulled tendon in the right rear leg is going to take longer to heal and get strong.  The vet had given him a steroid shot and while there has been some improvement Radar is having difficulty walking on it and still crys occasionally.  Our vet did not want him back on pain meds but does want him to relax and sleep to help the tendon to heal.  Because of this she has put him on a low dose of valium.  I trust her judgement in this as she is very familiar with this breed:  borzoi are extremely sensitive to pain medication.  I would rather Radar get sleep and heal rather than be on pain meds and overuse the leg.  His only activity at the moment are bathroom breaks and occasionally getting up on the sofa to cuddle with us or lick his dad's feet (Radar's personal fetish).  Other than that he is sleeping a lot.  He is eating and drinking well now although still less than his pre amp appetite.   We know tendon/muscle injuries can take a long time to heal figure it may take a week or two before he is really up and around again.

Thanks for the update. It's interesting that both Radar and Titan are coping with these issues so soon after the amp. I'm not sure if Titan's vet suggested anything like Valium, but it sounds like a good way to help Radar heal.

Keep us posted OK? Things will be fine, we know it!

Love,

Jerry

Radar is doing great.  Not 100% yet but getting there.  Our vet's treatment has been right on the money.

Today Radar gave me two wonderful gifts.  Radar used to love giving hugs, jumping up and putting his fore paws on you shoulders or around your waste and laying his head on your shoulder.  This morning he hopped up to me, wagged his tail then leaped up to give me a one paw hug and gave me exhuberant kisses too.  I almost cried to see some of his old happy boy personality coming back.  Then he went and got his teddy bear.  Radar treats his teddy like a live puppy and is oh so gentle with it.  He hasn't been interested in toys since the surgery so I really wanted to cheer him on as he taught himself to hold the toy in one paw so he could nuzzle and wash the baby.

We are so thrilled with his progress.  There is still some weakness in the rear leg but I can see him getting stronger every day.  Thank you Jerry and the gang here for us as we make this journey.

Thanks for asking.  Our Radar is doing amazing.  The rear leg is strong (and getting stronger with each day) and he isn't in pain any more.  His appetite and attitude are back to normal.  We've only had to help him get up a couple of times when, while sleeping, he's gotten into an odd position and can't roll over (once he got himself squirreled in between two chairs).

One weird thing he does now is that when we let all the dogs outside he races to go with them, takes one look around to see what everyone is doing then comes right back in.  Not sure if he's keeping tabs on his pack or just doesn't want to be left out.

He has graduated from playing with just his teddy bear to all the toys in the house and has developed a new habit of gathering all the toys to one spot so he can settle down amongst them and not have to get up again.  It's interesting to see small changes like this that he does to make his life easier.

We are thrilled with his progress and couldn't be prouder of him.

Ha! I do that too! I play in one spot for a long time, and Mom and Dad have learned to keep my water bowl closeby.

Of course, living in a 5th wheel trailer certainly helps keep things contained too!
