It sounds like the way you have been taking her out is just fine honestly.  And the drainage is GOOD! You will see it start to diminish soon, and that is also a good thing. I don't think I would encourage pottying in the house at all... you might open up a monster that you cannot put away after, if you know what I mean.

Some dogs cannot drain that fluid and end up having to go in and have a drain put in. This is really good that the drainage is actively seeping. Please keep her quiet and that will help the healing process. You really don't want her too active right now. You really are doing a fantastic job!!

Hey Amanda!  Just checking in after our Helpline chat and BAM, here you are!

Okay, here we go.... B T E A T H E......B R E A T H E.......inhale slooooowly .....exhale slooooowly......GOOD JOB!

And you ARE  doing a good job!  Remember,  if you have any concerns beyond what we have described  as a "normal seroma " and beyond the seroma link I gave you,  don't hesitate to have a Vet visit, okay?

Yeah, going up and down there flights of stairs a several  times a day can be rough on all of you!  The puppy pads supposedly  use a scent to attract a dog to pee on them, so it's  worth a try.  Maybe place them by the door.  Also, it would be great if you could get your other pup to pee on them as an "incentive".   Maybe you could even  catch a little of your other dogs pee with a ladle and pour it on the pee pad.

To state the obvious,  be sure and make a distinction  between a pad used to ABSORB pee, versus the puppy PEE pad.  The first one is the one you want her to lay in while draining.   You can get them at any pharmacy,  pretty much anywhere.

And yes, if  shr wants to  lay  on her incision  side, that's  okay.

Now,  his can we get you some much needed sleep???   This is such an exhausting  time and you MUST get some rest!  When she naps, you nap, okay?  I know you mentioned your boyfriend.   I'm  sure he can help tend to her while  you catch up on much deserved sleep.

And don't  hesitate  to call the Helpline if you need to, okay?

B R E A T H E.........and sleep!🌛🌛

She hasn't had any drainage in a few hours now, so I'm really happy about that! Although she just rolled over and I can no longer see it so I'll keep you posted......

Thanks for all of your advice! All seems to be better now, it hasn't drained in a few hours. However, she just rolled over to where I can't see anything so hopefully it'll still be dry when she moves again!

The boyfriend gets home in an hour and a half and y'all better believe he's gonna take a shift watching her while I catch up on some Zzz's! laughing

Good for Zzzzz's.... you need to take care of yourself too, serious. I had several episodes of falling asleep on the floor near Huck while he was recovering, and although it isn't recommended many of us are guilty of it because we couldn't leave them for fear that something would happen while we slept. When your bf comes home I'd def hit the real bed, but a little nap near your sleeping pup is far better than no sleep at all.

Don't forget to eat and take care of yourself!!!

Whatever it takes to get you all through this is whatever it takes, ok?

Big hugs,

Jackie and Huck 💖

I’m back! It’s 4:49 AM here and I’ve had about 2 hours of sleep. The drainage has decreased significantly and now really only happens if she’s up and moving around a lot. Does that sound typical?

in other news, I still don’t feel comfortable taking her down the stairs to potty. Am I being too worrisome about this? She won’t go inside, so it’s coming up on time to force her to go somehow. Any advice?

I have an idea for th indoor bathroom - can you get a strip of grass/sod from a garden centre and put it in a large tray or kids wading pool and kind of set up an indoor grass bathroom area or balcony bathroom? I was thinking that is the only thing that would make my dogs pee or poop inside. Not sure if it is practical to do but thought I would mention it as an idea.

My german shepherd had her rear leg amputated 6 months ago and I remember the exaustion well. You are a 24 hour dog nurse! It is physically hard with a large dog and then emotionally draining too. But you can do it! It does get better but is a slow process and well worth it. Take it day by day and don't rush it and in no time, life will be back to normal again!

We took her downstairs this morning and she finally peed and pooped again! I guess she’s house trained so well, she refuses to go inside.

I ended up getting a total of about 4 hours of sleep, and I’m craving so much more.

The drainage is still happening today, though it’s significantly less than yesterday. I’m guessing it just needed to come out rather than stay in 🤷🏻‍♀️

Paws crossed that the rest of today goes smoothly and without a hitch 🤞🏻

A while back we reviewed this indoor dog toilet. A bit small for dogs like Wyatt Ray but I think that if he had to go he would use it.

Really glad to hear Ziva went potty! Good girl! clappoopicon_pngsuperstar

So far your day is off to a great start. Now if you can both sneak in some ZZZZZZs that would be heavenly!

Oh we sure will here in a bit, I get to work from home so I get to do some of that and THEN maybe catch some ZZZs!

Now, I'm sure it's normal and fine but I've noticed her fur is kinda healing into parts of her incision and scabby parts. In a couple spots, the scabbing covers the stitching a little bit. Is that typical during healing? So far, I haven't noticed any swelling or excess redness, in fact, her bruising is already fading a lot! https://i.ibb.co/jrhDrG4/BD7-C04-D2-F798-45-F9-B37-A-2-F5-C1-C532-D1-F.jpg

Come to think of it....today she's 1 week post op! Her surgery was a week ago today clap

Yay for the first week behind you!!! That incision really looks good. There's always bound to be a little crustiness as it heals. You can wet a facecloth with warm water, wring it out, and and just hold it in the area a couple times a day. That will feel good and help her to not be as itchy.

I hope you both are able to get plenty of rest today!

Ugh, we have another gushing seroma tonight 😭 this time, my boyfriend is home to help deal with it. He panicked the same way I did yesterday when I first saw it.

I thought we were done with the drainage but I guess not 😔

Bummer!  Since it has been getting  less and less though, this may just be the tail end of all the gushing.  Hope so!

And YAY for poopicon_pngpoopicon_png!!!   How are you handling  getting her up and down three flights of stairs?  That has to be hard on all of you!
