Ok. Doc was able to staple him shut again. He had ripped 5-6 staples out. Maybe I will earn a prize as frequent flyer to the vets office. Incision still looked good.

Whew! Glad the incision is intact.

Yeah, many Tripawds pawrents all know that "frequent flyer" at their vet's office!

Soo the incision did split open, its stapled back shut, there's a sock oh his hind paw to protect the incision from his claws. Also, the incision is still seeping, but jot as badly as it was.

Ooo they said the incision wpuld ooze and seep, but its steadily oozing and seeping.. the sock is staying on. I put it on then put vet wrap around the top. Hes in a kennel to restrict movement. He was stapled up around 10am. Its now 1030pm amd the same amount of oozing if not more is occurring.

Anyone know if this is normal? It breaks my heart to kennel him. He really wants to move around. Nothing can be simple.

Hmmm. I would let the vet know about the seeping. It's probably nothing serious but for peace of mind give them a call. Let us know what they say.

The sock / vet wrap is a great idea!

It works for a little while!! Calvert goes outside to go potty and runs a little ways away, starts scratching, realizes hes not accomplishing anything with the sock, then starts chewing on the sock. He has his appetite and energy back today!! Just cannot sit still and wants to play. The vets said to let the incision air and not cover it, but I covered it anyway. Hopefully that will stop the seeping. It brings me joy that he wants to play!! Since his surgery, he just laid down and didnt get up except to eat, drink and potty. Im ecstatic about it. Just worried that his energy is gonna get him in trouble. . Dont need more stitches put in.

Have you tried a t shirt? Still allows air, but is an additional barrier against scratching. I tied Ty' up with a ponytail elastic at bottom. Otherwise, he would pee on it when he went outside. Kid size works also. I went to a thrift store and bought a couple. Lori and Ty

TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed  and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.

Glad to hear that Calvert is recovering well from his surgery....but I know that others have said that young pups can be more of a challenge after the amputation surgery because of their energy level. :)

I hope the seeping has slowed down by this morning!

Looking forward to seeing pics of your handsome guy!

Hugs

Yes!! I did think if a t shirt last night im gonna do it. Thanks!!

Lol Im just happy to see him trying to play!!! Today is 7 days post op. :-)

My other dogs behavior when playing with Calvert has changed. Its kinda like Calvert is the kid that falls off the monkey bars in elementary school. . You think that normalcy will come with time? While Calvert's returning to normal behavior, and my Other dogs behavior towards him has changed i dont want socialization issues to start.. any suggestion or thoughts?

Calvert (tan) and Vader (black) <3

Calvert my pookems snuggle bug
c-dawg

Calvert loves rides. And snuggling. The most intense snuggler, ever. However, since his accident, he hasn't snuggled. Last night he started too, but decided not. Also, might not be snuggling because of warmer, hotter weather. :)

Update on owie:

I did put a pressure dressing on Calvert's incision last night. It was just too much oozing to leave uncovered.

This morning it was fine, hadn't soaked through or anything. When I saw it around 10:00am, it was soaked. I called the vet and they said it was ok, not to be alarmed. It was normal. So I took off the dressing, took pictures, and redressed it. I took it into the vet's office to make sure they knew what I was talking about.

for the dressing I used a 5x9" super absorbent surgical pad. This thing is like a maxi pad. I didn't expect it to soak through as fast as it did. Within 8 hours it was done for. I explained this to the vet.

soaked surgical dressing

The drainage was a dull pinkish red color. It just seemed to endlessly come out of the incision. And While I was trying to reapply a new dressing, I accidentally pushed on the shoulder area and the fluid just GUSHED out. Like a river. Much worse than the picture.

incision with "ooze"

Vet said to keep the dressing on it. Ok, no problem. He said the fluid is seroma that has built up. He said its better for that fluid to come out. So, we're gonna keep changing that dressing every 8 hours until it's stopped, or slow enough he doesn't need it wrapped. Either way, I stocked up on vet wrap today. way-cool
