Hi all -

Can you please share your doggies experience after 1 treatment of Pamidronate?
Did it help/not help and if so how long did it help? Side effects? Did your dog
still need pain meds in addition to the treatment?

Our senior 3 legged wonder dog Max now has a new formation of OS in his front
leg--growing slowly we are told but he is in a lot of pain. We were just raving
to people last week how fantastic he has been doing (1 yr since symptoms,9 mos
post amp/chemo, lungs clear)and yesterday he suddenly didn't want to put any
weight on the limb. After Oncologist visit yesterday/xrays she recommends this
so would love opinions. He is on Previcox, Tramadol & Gabapentin today--I hate
seeing him doped up though I know it is helping...

Thanks, Tiffany

(Max's mom)

Oh Tiffany, we're so sorry to hear this about our buddy Max.

I found these existing references to Pamidronate in the forums. Timberkins was on it along with chemo for nine months. This also sounds like a great question for the Ask A Vet forum. Pam is certain to know more ...

Pamidronate can help reduce bone cancer pain by inhibiting osteoclasts (the cells that are destroying the bone).  It is an IV infusion and pretty safe but it doesn't help all dogs.  I would also consider radiation to help reduce the pain, although it can be hard to find an oncologist that can also perform this.  In additon to gabapentin your vet can also add amantadine.

I am very sorry to hear about Max.  It seems that the bone mets can just spring up overnight.  Are his lungs still clear?

Thanks for the info Jerry and Pam.

Interestingly, one of the previous discussions on pamidronate was  from Tazziedog a previous thread about Max when we suspected he might have another tumor late last year. We have been putting off doing anyhthing as he has been doing so well. Yes Pam, the pain can sure spring up over night. His lungs are still clear which is good news.

Tiffany is taking him to the vet right now as he has gotten worse in 24 hours and we are going to give this a try. Our oncologist also does radiation and we will be considering that as well. I will also ask about amanatadine. Wish us luck! Smile

Hi there Max - we're sorry to hear that you're not feeling well buddy. Our thought and prayers are with you and your wonderful pawrents. Please keep us posted on how you're doing.

We did 2 treatments of pamidrinite right after the chemo...back in July/August. They were one month apart...Zeus did not have any side effects from the treatments. I really hope they help Max.

We're thinking of you ~

Hi all,

Max had a tough morning. He was in so much pain he did not pee until he was in the doctors office all over the floor! But he is doing much better now. We are told the treatment will not have an effect for a few days so who knows why he is doing better now? Maybe he knows he is in good hands.

We will keep you posted on how he is doing...

Update-

We are happy to report that the Pamidrinite treatment has been very successful!  As we were told, it took about 4 days for the treatment to have effect. He seemd to be feeling good after returning from the vet, but that did not last long.  He needed assistance just going outside for a few days, but now Max the wonder dog is happily hopping around once again! Let's hope it continues...

P.S. Happy one year ampuversary Zeus!
