Hello,
My dog had to lose his entire leg up to the shoulder after a cancer diagnosis.
He came home from his operation with almost no pain. After 3 days, he cried out in pain once when getting onto a dog bed and I worried at the time he had stretched something. Over time, he seems to be getting more stiff, I assumed it was muscle soreness.
Then again, at around 6-7 days, he started crying out in pain again. It comes on suddenly, sometimes when he's laying still, but sometimes brought on by movement; it lasts 30 seconds, then seems to go away completely for an hour or more. It is day 10 and for the last few days, every day seems worse than the last, with the pain seeming worse and coming on more frequently
Could this be phantom pain , or do we need to worry about an internal stitch coming loose, eg, the ones in his muscle? The vet is closed until tomorrow, I'm hoping to bring him in for a checkup then if possible
Hi Banjo and furmily, welcome. Your future posts won't need to wait for approval so post away.
What kind of pain medication did Banjo come home with? Name, dose, and frequency?
And what breed type is he? Large? Small?
I'm guessing he got a 3-day injectable during surgery (Nocita), and when it wore off 72 hours later he started having breakthrough pain. It could be phantom pain or it could be muscle soreness in general. What's his activity level like right now? Is he playing with other dogs? How often?
At 10 days out it's not unusual for new Tripawds to still need pain management . Sounds like Banjo could benefit from some. And also, don't forget that rehabilitation (physio) therapy is super helpful for new Tripawds and their people. The Tripawds Foundation can pay for your first rehab visit so please book a consult for him. It makes a huge difference in recovery and life on 3!
