Hello,
My 8 year old Boxer Mix was diagnosed with osteosarcoma early September and had a front right limb amputation on 9/25. We are now 9 days post-op and I am just a little curious about the recovery process and when she will be able to do a bit more. She loves to sleep in my bed and get on the couch but I have not let her do so since she isn't too far out from surgery. She sleeps in her beds and kennel but again I know she would prefer to be in my bed, she's always been the dog that sleeps under the covers and/or on top of me every night and I really want her to be able to do so again. My bed is only a foot and a half off the floor, does anyone have some advice on when it would be appropriate to allow her to get up on my bed?
I live in Chicago and have a bit of a trek to get her outside so I have purchased a wagon but one issue we have ran into is her fear of being picked up, which is new. Prior to her surgery she didn't mind being lifted but now she freaks out and wont let me even try. I want to be able to take her to her favorite park to lay in the sun, her favorite pass time, but she is unable to walk there yet. I know I should wait to take her but I can tell she is very bored and it breaks my heart. I've been having my friends come by to give her love and some sense of socializing but again I can tell she is bored and needs more stimulation. Any advice on recovery and when to start reintroducing her favorite activities is greatly appreciated!
Hi Samantha! Well, it's funny because Donnie just asked the same questions: Can my front amp girl sleep in my bed now? Check out the bed step he got. A foot and a half doesn't sound like much and depending on your dog, is probably OK if you have good traction around the base of your bed. But we always recommend a pet step so that there is less impact on the joints.
As for getting her outside in the wagon. Have you tried throwing her favorite treats into the wagon to get her to jump inside? Can you put it next to a step so she can more easily step into it? We really like dog strollers because they are super easy for dogs to walk into. Being in a big city this would come in really handy for you.
Also don't forget interactive brain games are super helpful for keeping her mind active and happy. Also, have you considered canine rehab therapy? You're in a great area with tons of excellent therapists! Our Tripawds Foundation can even pay for your first rehab visit . It's a great way to have a better sense of what she is and is not capable of doing now, and later in the future. You'll also learn how to keep her strong and hoppy!
