Hello All - Reba (English mastiff, 160 pounds pre amp, 140 pounds post amp) is about a month after amputation and while the remaining back leg still needs to gain some muscle she is doing quite well. Mom and Dad are doing better, thanks to the support of this site. So, I thought I'd ask another question. About a week ago I noticed Reba had some white bumps in her mouth. They are on her lips and tongue. over the last week they have gone away and come back in different places - almost like canker sores. She is still her normal self and eating with speed and quickness. But she licks her lips a lot more - randomly. I'm wondering if she picked up a virus somewhere or if this could be cancer related?
Also, while we opted to do the amputation, we have opted against chemotherapy. I want to control her weight as I don't want her to get overweight with one back leg but should I expect that she will need more food or a food with higher fat and protein?
Thanks again!
Heather and Reba
Hi Reba, we're glad you're already a month out on the amp and doing better. We're sorry about those mouth sores; ouch! As least you're eating though, that's really good.
Ok, to start, you might want to post this question in our Ask a Vet Forum. The good Dr. Pam W. (our hero!), checks in there often and might be able to give you some advice.
Also, we did have a discussion about "Mouth sores five weeks after amputation." Hope this helps, and we hope those nasty things go away! Keep us posted.

Heather and Reba,
What you are describing sounds like pappiloma virus. You can find quite a bit about it with an internet search. If it is that it will resolve itself in a period of time. Codie Rae had a horrible case, where her black lips were covered in white bumps, shortly after she arrived here. In her case the vet gave a course of antibiotics and she got over it in a couple of months. My understanding is that dogs are most susceptible when there immune systems are compromised, which was the case with Codie Rae at the time. She was having suture reactions, along with battling tape and round worms. If it is the pappiloma virus the vet can easily diagnose it and make a treatment recommendation. Reba could have gotten the virus almost anywhere she was around dogs, as it can be fairly contagious.
On Reba's diet others can comment better than I about the diet/cancer connection. With any tripawd you want to keep the weight under control to make it easier for them to function. Better a bit underweight than overweight.
FTE, you're a GENIUS! Thank you!

May 2001-Jan 21, 2010.....I'm a dog and I'm AWESOME!..... Always.
Thank you!! Seems like Reba Sue's mouth sores will clear up on their own. We'll keep an eye on them. They appear to be highly contagious and with our other Mastiff, Erma Jean, in the house I guess we'll have to keep an eye on her as well.
Most of the dogs in our family and extended family are two namers!! We have Reba Sue and Erma Jean and they have a cousin - Charlie Murphy!
Thanks again for all the feedback!
