Mojo's initial diagnosis/surgery.

Here's what Day 2 post-op looks like. She'll wear the compression shirt for the next two weeks till her sutures are removed.

Awwww....sweet Mojo.  Looks like she's resting  comfortably.

Now you get some rest while you can too!

Awwww I so want to smooch her!

Rest is medicinal, it's helping her get her groove back. I love that you have such a terrific recovery area for her. Good job! smiley_clap

We got her outside this afternoon for a potty break and it was literally like carrying a 70lb sack of potatoes. She doesn't seem to want to use her legs at all. Front leg I can understand b/c of the swelling but what's up with the rear??? There were a couple of "actual" hops she took but that was it. Is this the sea-leg scenario everyone mentions? Also, once we got outside she just laid there didn't pee. Almost dinner/pill time so maybe we'll have better luck with an evening potty break.

Hmm. It does sound like she might be over-medicated so definitely let your vet know what's happening. Yes, it's pretty common but it's always good to check with your vet, they can usually point you in the right direction.

Let us know how her evening potty break goes. Also consider how she usually goes potty: if she is not keen on having you hover over her, maybe give her a little space to do her thing at her favorite spot if that's possible. Try to make it as normal as possible while being there in case she needs you. She might surprise you! I hope she goes. Keep us posted.

We just tried another potty break and she just laid there again, she hasn't peed since 7-7:30am. Luckily with SouthPaws they are 24hrs so I just spoke to the ER Dept. They said it seems like it's pretty par for the course and especially with her being a grandma it may take her a little longer then younger pups. They said as long as she isn't straining to urinate/deficate and that its not discolored we shouldn't be too worried. If things change they said to definitely give them a call. They said when she's ready she'll go again so in the meantime I'll be headed to Walmart to pick up some puppy pads just in case she ends up peeing in her sleep and so we can protect the carpet.

Her Rx regime is:

200mg of Cefpodoxime (1.5 caplets) every 24hrs

75mg of Carpofen (1 caplet) every 12hrs

300mg of Gabapentin (1 capsule) every 12hrs

Plus her normal daily stuff is: 2 fish oils, a Dasquin Msn chew and an Estradiol (for incontinence)

Yes, this is what it looks like BEFORE she gets her sea legs and balance.  Her Gabapentin  is not at the high end at all,  soo most likely she's just  still shaking  off  the hospital meds.  And yes, just like people, seniors usuatake a bit lo get to recover. Gaba "may" cause a slight sedation. or drowsiness effect.  You can discuss  that with the Vet if she continues  not to act engagged or show signs  of alertness.

Keep in mind, this is MAJOR surgery, all while trying  to adjust to three.  A hooman would still be in the hospital on a morphine  drip!

How is her water intake?  Eating?

Co ti ue ti massage all up and down her spine and neck and shoulders  before you try and get her up to go outside.  Right now her muscles  are probably tight and sore as she tries to fig out her new gait.

One other thought.  Her compression bandage may be making her feel weird and the sensations of the pressure may be confusing her.  May make her feel like she's being  restrained.  Not sure I'm make sense?  Some Vets use compression bandages.some don't.

Do let us know when she pees again....even of it's in her bed....pee is good-

She'll get her sparkle back....s,ow,y but surely.

Hugs

Thanks Sally. We just got her outside and she PEEEED! Now we are going to hit the hay. Her water in take is good, everytime we give her the bowl she drinks. She ate all her breakfast and dinner although both were at half portions. Will increase food a little tomorrow.

Again, thanks for all the advice!

Day 3 post op: Has eaten and is drinking water when we give her the bowl. She still hasn't peed today. The last time we took her out we just let her lay there for a little bit and get some fresh air. Our neighbors across the street saw we were out so they came over and Mojo actually made the attempt to get up...she was in the sitting-up position for a few seconds. Her front leg is still swollen, no more then it was when I measured it yesterday. She definitely has the "resting" part of rehab down packed. We keep hoping that the next day will bring her some more mobility but guess we'll keep waiting. Just wish we knew what she was thinking.

Hope everyone is enjoying the first day of Spring!

Day 3 is still sooo early. I'll bet by the time you read this she will have gone. That's a GREAT sign that she was interested in your neighbors' visit! And also that the swelling isn't worse.

Hang in there, it goes get better!

Hoppy Spring to you too, keep up the pawsitivity!

We took her out around 8 still nothing. Sher got her dinner and meds and around 9 starting panting a lot, took her out again and she finally peed. At one point while outside we were barely supporting her with the towel and sling and she was standing. I think we are starting to "see" her sea legs now. She's tucked in for the night now are we will be following very soon.

She finally pooped! I would have preferred outside (or on any of the pee pads laid out) and not the living room carpet. She also peed a little on the carpet and then at some point made her way around the coffee table to throw up and then fall back asleep. We set one of our security cameras in the living to try and catch her "on the move" but it only captured her trying to sit up then falling around 1:30am. We're not sure why it didn't capture any of her other movements.  Took her outside, she just laid there and then we brought her back in after a lil bit of fresh air. Got her back to her blankets and she just stood there so we loosened the slings on her so that she was supporting herself and she was doing it until she went to shake and started to fall but we were able to catch her with the slings. She only ate half of her reduced breakfast which was at least enough to give her the Rxs. Her tummy is prolly a little upset still.

WHEW! poopiconpoopiconpoopicon Did you do the potty dance? icon_lol That's terrific, even if it wasn't quite on target. Yikes!

But hmm, the throwing up...I would let your vet know what's going on. Between her reduced appetite and the vomit, I would have them assess her progress right now. Probably totally fine but better to be assured that she doesn't have an infection or anything like that happening.
