Buddy had his right rear leg amputated last Wednesday. He had started limping on it a few weeks earlier and, at first the Vet said it was a torn ACL. When he kept limping (on & off) for a couple of more weeks, we took him back and they x-rayed and told us it looked like Osteosarcoma.

Then, last week, the leg came off. He was doing fine, we thought, though a bit lackluster, obviously. But then he wasn't bouncing back...seemed to be getting more lethargic and yesterday his incision was a tiny bit wet and a bit raised.

We took him to the vet this AM and it is, indeed, an infection. I don't know how it happened. We washed his bed, kept the cone on (except once when I was putting on his vest and he got two licks in before we got the cone back on)

How common is a post-op infection? I'm beside myself. The vet is putting in a drain now, putting him on antibiotics and sending in for a culture to determine the exact sort of infection. I can't bear the thought that Buddy would go out this way. He's 13. Such a sweetie pie dog.

[Our other dog (14, Pal) had cancer surgery - a mass removed from his abdomen in September - and we do a followup scan on Thursday. The Vet originally said Pal couldn't have Chemo because of his kidney issues - but the Oncologist we now have (because of Buddy) says she can. Kicking myself if it spread in the interim. It was "fully contained in the cecum" at surgery...]

Thanks for any info.

Hi Buddy, Pal and furmily! Your future posts won't need to wait for approval so post away.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with all this cancer in your life! Once is hard enough but twice? Yikes! And in a pandemic, I can't even imagine. You sound very strong and capable of tackling anything that comes your way though, so keep up the pawsitivity!

Surgical infections are relatively common and sometimes there is just no way to know why they started. It could have happened during surgery itself, or who knows. Try not to get hung up on that (as much as I know you want answers!). The good news is that your vet caught it early and it's being treated. Also, sending it off to a lab is such a fantastic move, to culture for something more serious like MRSA . Your vet sounds pawesome, Buddy is in good hands and should make a comeback very soon now that he's on the meds.

Don't kick yourself about Pal. It's awesome that you sought an oncologist for a second opinion, and got the green light for treatment. You did VERY good acting as Pal and Buddy's advocate. Be proud of yourself and know that your dogs are getting excellent care that will help them get back to their old life in no time at all.

Stay strong, stay pawsitive, and around here we like to also say learn to Be More Dog . You can do this!

Keep us posted OK?

Thank you!!!

I am really worried, of course, about MRSA . But, will try not to leap ahead.

Either way, Buddy is coming back with a drainage tube...if anyone has any tips on the care for that?

Thanks!

Exactly, one hop at a time!

Here's a post about amputation wound care that talks about the type of drain we had to deal with for Wyatt Ray :

As Jerry said, you are a great advocate  for Buddy and good for you for recognizing  a possible  infection.   Your Bet seems to be on top of it, doing g the culture,  the drain, etc.Even IF it is MRSA , the culture  will show the best antibiotic  to use and get ot taken care of.  AND yes, MRSA is treatable  and curable!!

And keep is posted on Pal too.  We'll be sending  lots of pawsitive  healing energy to Buddy and Pal.

Hugs
