We are so happy that we took the beach trip. Lee's family is renting a beach house there, so we were able to park and visit a private beach area.  It is so very hot here and Bo started panting the minute he got out of the car. He saw the ocean and immediately headed in that direction. He took a break in the outdoor shower...laid down on the floor and we just turned the shower on cool for him. It was a pretty long stretch from the house to the beach...less than a 1/4 of a mile, but close to it. We decided that it would be too much for him to get down to the water, considering he could barely get up to go to the bathroom this morning. Thought we would just take pictures on the deck area with the ocean in the background.....

Bo had other plans. He mustered up every ounce he had and started heading down to the beach. Every few yards, he would stop and take a break. When he finally got off of the boardwalk and into the sand, I laid down with him for some pictures. After a rest, I tried to get Bo to head back to the house. Again, a no go. Bo started running, really running toward the water. I ran with him with tears running down my face. We stopped a couple of times to rest, but he just kept getting back up and running to the ocean. He made it! He flopped down in the ocean and let the waves roll around him. It was one of the most beautiful moments of my life and it will be in my heart forever.

We had to carry him back to the beach house, where he took a nap and ate a ham sandwich. We are home now and needless to say, he is exhausted. I don't know what Bo was trying to tell us today... I can't analyze his actions or behaviors anymore. We just have to follow our hearts and I know they will take us where we need to go.

Bo say thanks to everyone for the support!  I'll post some pictures soon 🙂

It was a great experience...He really wanted that sand in his paws and the salt water in his hair!

I think we really have to embrace his determination and the strength it took him to make that trek, and then make it our own.  It's not an easy road...it's long...a few rough patches here and there...but when you get "there" it was all worth it in the end.  If we applied that same principle to the every-day hardships Bo and other tripawds struggle through, we'd understand that they're fighting for something worth living for...And when it's over, it's something you'll forever cherish, never regret and remember fondly.

Hooray for Bo and for his pawrents!!  It's been a really long time since I posted anything.  Sweet Sylvie has been doing so well - everything has been oh-so-normal - so I haven't been thinking about the cancer, the amputation, or anything but normal, everyday life.  My husband keeps encouraging me to post so Sylvia can serve as an inspiration to others.

Then, a week ago I took her in for her 9-month (since amputation) check-up and a very small "thing" has appeared on her x-rays.  I so wished that I had posted when we didn't seem to have a care in the world.

Anyway - I've been reading the posts here with a mixture of fear and hope and sadness and dispair and admiration for Bo's triumphant journey to the ocean!  I am so happy for you that you chose to make that trip to the beach.  Your story reminds me of how important every day of life is, since things can change so abruptly.  I am sending loving and positive thoughts to Bo and to his family.  Whatever else the future holds for Bo, may it be filled with comfort, happy times and mostly, thoughts of the simple joys of ham sandwiches, and the feel of cool water from an outdoor beach shower, and waves washing over him, and hugs from his pawrents!

Sweet Silly Sylvie, the Old English Sheepdog

Diagnosed with osteosarcoma 11/04/2010 at almost 7 years of age * Left hind leg amputated 11/09/2010 * Chemo on 12/10, 12/17, 01/10, 01/31

Sweet Sylvie's earthly journey ended on Nov. 3, 2011, one day short of a year since her diagnosis and 6 days short of her one-year ampuversary.  Her family celebrates her life as a sheepdog – ever the puppy, ever silly, ever sweet – and are grateful for our 7 years together.
