Thank you for this wonderful website. Our 6 year old Anatolian Shepherd Janie (100 lbs) has been diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right hind leg and it will be amputated this Thursday by our vet. Have been reading a lot but wondered about recent information on whether to do chemo or not (her chest xray appears clear and her alkaline phosphatase is normal) and also wondered about the vaccine as it appears that perhaps the limb needs to be shipped off to get the vaccine made. Does anyone have experience with this and/or success of same? Thank you in advance for any advice. Dana  (P.S we are about an hour north of Dallas if anyone has oncology suggestions)

Hi Janie and family, welcome. We are so glad you found us! Sorry about the diagnosis, it's a tough one but you are off to a good start by getting rid of her bad leg and investigating your options for treatment (there are more than ever now!). As an aside, one of our most long-lived members was a handsome three-legged Anatolian named Cemil! He lived well into old age despite the prognosis, an incredible survivor!

Yes, others have had experiences with the chemo decision and different osteosarcoma vaccines (there are at least 3 that I know of). Different oncology clinics are using different vaccines so once you pick a clinic they can let you know what they are using. Has your vet not referred you to a clinic yet?

Here are some helpful Tripawds blog posts about osteosarcoma immunotherapy vaccines

Also consider posting a request in our Veterinary Specialists Recommendations Forum topic. Someone did ask about vets in Dallas recently. We always suggest looking for an AAHA-accredited clinic to start.
