Hello my 4 month old Australian cattle dog/terrier mix just had his front left leg amputated 7 days ago and the first two nights he seemed perfectly fine and then every night since then I’ve been woken up almost every hour to him yelping in what I can only imagine is pain. He’s currently on cephalexin, carprofen, tramadol and gabapentin. I don’t know if the medicine he has isn’t strong enough but he can’t even move without yelping. I also think he now has a bladder infection or something along those lines because when he urinates it’s either really long or very short and has a strong odor to it and then he constantly licks himself after. I think that with him holding it in because he doesn’t want to get up because it hurts is maybe what has caused it. Has anyone experienced anything along these lines? He’s only 18lbs and I’m not sure what the highest dosage he should be getting is. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Casondra, welcome. Your future posts won't need approval so post away.

Please call your vet today and let them know what is happening. Usually it's a matter of adjusting the medication to find the right balance for him. If he is showing signs of pain, it's pretty severe so get to the vet asap and let us know what happens OK?

Four months old?  Just a baby.....and I vet he's a xute baby too!   So why the need for amputation?

Yes, can only ditto Jerry.  You need a Vet visit, urine sample, etc.  It defi apunds like a better system for pain manag needs to be figured out.  FWIW, Tramadol  hs been proven NOT to be ineffective  for this type of MAJOR surgery pain.

What is the dose of Gaba and frequency?

What has his activity been like?  He needs total rest and ahort leashed potty breaks.

When he first came home he was still ,loaded  with strong hospital meds.  Then after they wear off several days later we often see a crash and that's  when pain meds need to be tweaked.

What does his Incision look like?  No oozing , extreme redness, extreme swelling etc?  Has he been eating and drinking  okay?  Any poop yet?

Phantom  pain usually  shows up as quick sudden yelping and moving around to get "away" from the pain.  It doesn't  usually  last more than a minute at most.

So yes, let us know what the Vet says, okay?  Obviously  we are not  Vets and  not giving Vet advice.

Keep us posted.  You'll get this figured out, okay?
